Got my 9317 closer to being where I want it.

I replaced the stock a long time ago on my 9317, because the Boyd's caused my right hand to cramp up, if I shot it much, really like the looks of the Body's but the hand cramping got old after a while. The stock I put on there, I don't have a clue what brand it is, but I really like it. It's comfortable, got a bit of a palm swell on the grip, definitely fits me better. I bedded the stock a while back, that came out very well, the receiver is nice and solid in the stock now. So the gun has been a lot of fun to shoot since. The other things I wanted to take care of, were the scope, scope mount and rings, then the trigger.

When I have the ammo the gun, likes, it shoots great. The ammo, I have found, is the biggest accuracy problem with the gun. Wrong ammo, poor accuracy, right ammo, great accuracy. In my ammo search, I have found CCI offers a lot more different types of 17 HMR ammo than I ever would have guessed. I have found my gun likes the CCI TNT ammo. I want to try their TNT Green, which is a solid copper hollow point, they claim has match grade accuracy, not sure how that will work. Then they have a full metal jacket ammo, that is not supposed to expand or much at all. Then they have a Gamepoint, that is supposed to be a good hunting bullet, that expands well. The TNT ammo I have been using is supposed to be pushing that little 17 gr. bullet out the muzzle around 2550 fps. That's pretty impressive for a rim fire. So far that's the only ammo I have found my gun likes. The other stuff I listed, I want to try, but have not at this time. I am really curious if that TNT Green really does improve accuracy.

So I finally found a scope that I really like, think it's perfect for the gun. I picked up a silver Leupold VX 2 4-12X 40mm. Definitely like it better than the Simmons 44 Mag scope, I had on the gun previously. The Simmons held zero very well, but they do not have a 1/4" per click adjustment, it's more like 1/2" to 3/4" per click. So that had been a irritation, but once you get it as close as it will get to the bull, it will hold that zero without a problem. Then I wanted to replace the cheap bases and rings I was using. I started searching and found DNZ makes a mount for the 9317s. So I looked and they do make a silver mount for the 9317. So I got one ordered, it took almost a month to get, but I got it.

I got the old scope, scope mounts and rings off of the gun, then mounted the new mount and installed the new scope. Going to try and get it sighted in this weekend. The last part I plan on buying for the gun, is a Rifle Basix trigger. The AccuTrigger is ok, at first I really did not like it at all, it was odd. But after time, I have gotten used to it. If I shoot some other rifle such as my Creedmoor, with a good trigger in it. I find I definitely prefer a better quality, more traditional trigger over the Accutrigger. I hope to get the trigger ordered soon. I searched for triggers, the only two I found were Timney and Rifle Basix. The Timney has a option for a 2 lb. trigger pull. The Rifle Basix can be adjusted down to 1 1/4 lb. They both can be gotten in silver. I am going try the Rifle Basix, never had one of their triggers, only had Timney in bolt actions. I have never replaced a trigger in a rim fire before.

After taking the gun on multiple hikes, I realized I need a sling on the gun. But the stock has not sling swivels. So I am going to take the stainless sling swivels out of the Body's stock and install them in the stock that is on the gun. Then find a sling for the gun.

That's a nice lookin gun. The stock is similar to the Savage Mako stock.

I haven't tried the TNT Green in .17HMR but I have the 30gr. TNT Green in .22mag. I currently shoot the CCI Gamepoint in my .17HMR.

I've shot a pile of stuff with the .17gr V-Max but probably my all the time favorite is the .17gr CCI TNT. They don't seem to expand or break apart as rapidly on heavier bodied critters. I hit a big boar raccoon in the chest at less than 50 yards once and never recovered it shooting the V-Max.

I bought a couple thousand rounds of the Hornady 17gr Vmax after my rifle shot several 1” groups at 100 with it. That’s pretty **** impressive for a rimfire IMO. Friday night I took 4 jackrabbits in 5 shots at 240-265 yds. Not bad for a little ol 17 gr projectile. It took a 55 lb javelina a few months back at 80 yds as well. That’s the only heavier game I’ve shot with it that I can recall, but I haven’t had anything run yet.

I have another 17 that I have killed a handful of coyotes, coons, rabbits, and a few hogs with. I was 19-21 when I shot that one mostly, and I just used anything I could find cheap. Not sure why it liked or why performed the best on game with it.

I picked up a Ruger American rimfire for my wife to use while we are beating down the ranch roads. She shoots the 17gr. Hornady V-Max out of it behind a Dead Air Mask. I have to say, it’s one of the most accurate and fun guns I have ever shot. Sounds like a staple gun and it hammers. Puts 5 under a silver dollar at 100 yards. Tried the TNT and various others with little to no luck, but the V-Max was the golden ticket.

Glad you are enjoying your 17!

The first group is a five shot group I did with the rifle a on news years day, off of my shooting bench. The other group, was also shot off my bench about four years ago, with the same gun, scope and ammo. I am pretty sure the group with the dime next to it, is a five shot group, it does not look like a five shot group. I was pretty sure I have always done five shot groups with this gun, mainly because of the five shot magazine. But it may not be, really not sure. These were done at 100 yards, with CCI TNT ammo. My bench is not very stable, it teeters a bit. I plan on building a bigger heavier bench, when I have time. I have found my groups that I shoot at the house off of my bench are not as good as I do off of range bench, with all of my rifles. My bench is definitely not the most stable, but better than off hand. I have shot nicer looking groups at the range, with the same gun, same ammo.

After I get another bench built and a new trigger, hopefully I can regularly produce better groups with this rifle, with this same ammo. And after I find the limit of this ammo, maybe I can find some ammo that does better than this stuff.

You could say, I put five inside a area, smaller than one 16 ga. slug hole, also done at 100 yards.

The CCI TNT ammo is what my Marlin really likes too. It's good stuff.

              The rifle is looking good.

Lookin good. I’m in the process of trying to build a 93r17 exactly like my 114’s as a trainer. Trying to find the parts has been the biggest headache.

The 93r17 I have now loves the CCI TNT’s as well. It shoots great even out to 300+ at steel targets. I love that thing and is a heck of a little gun that has put down a ton of animals.

Yep. This is my second one, between the two I have had, I killed a lot of coons, about four coyotes, lots of squirrels and a turkey or two. I love the sound when that little bullet hits a critter. Fubars squirrels, very well.

Thanks. So far my favorite rimfire.

Nice. I love my 93. I had an old Remington 597 17 I sold when we needed some $ years ago. Always regretted it. Bought the 93r17 last year.

I actually like the accutrigger. I think I adjusted it down but can't remember. Both of my 17s preferred the CCI TNT bullets as well.

Never shot out of a bench, but laying prone with a bipod mine will shoot well under an inch at 100. Almost touching if there's no wind.

I've killed only squirrels with my 93. The 597 wiped out all sorts of game.

I love that stock you added!

Yesterday morning, I got to try out the new blind and the new scope on the 17 HMR. I was getting a lot of squirrel pictures on the game camera, that is pointed at the feeder. So yesterday morning I got up, walked to the blind, got in it and waited. Within about two minutes I could see a squirrel under the feeder, then a second squirrel. I waited till one was clear, popped it, the other ran off, but came back within 30 seconds. It finally got clear, so I popped it. Two shots two down. I am liking the new blind and the new scope.

After about 7 minutes or so, I decided to get down and go pick up the two squirrels, as I was getting out of the blind, the feeder went off. So I turned around and closed the doors and waited. Sure enough within a minute I could see a squirrel heading towards the feeder through the brush. But then a young buck showed up and a doe. I waited till I had a clear shot on the squirrel, popped it in the head, the squirrel did cartwheels all over the place for a while. The buck thought the squirrel was flipping out. The two deer went back to eating. Within a minute or two another squirrel was near the feeder but there was too much grass and branches in between me and the squirrel, then the young buck started working towards the squirrel. Eventually, they were lined up, so I could not shoot. It took a couple of minutes, but the squirrel finally moved away from the buck and got under the feeder. I popped him in the head, he did a few cartwheels, then quit. By this time the young buck was really wondering about those goofy squirrels, kept staring at them.

After a while, of watching the deer moving around the squirrels, and trying to eat around them. I decided to sneak out of the blind, go back down the trail to the blind, to the main trail and then walk up the main trail to the feeder. The deer never knew I was in the blind or that I got out of it. When I got about 30 to 40 yards from the feeder the deer realized I was walking up the trail and took off. There are a few bends in the trail, so you only have visibility of about 30 to 40 yards between bends in the trail and then the feeder. So I walked up to the feeder to retrieve the squirrels and there turned out to be two more squirrels off to the right of the feeder I could not see from the blind. They took off running, one went up a tree, the other zigged one way then another, then stopped and stood up. I popped him quickly. On 12X, with the front objective set to 60 to 70 yards. The squirrel was only about 15 or less, yards away. So all I saw was a brown blur in the scope. The last squirrel went up a tree, jumped around from limb to limb, but really did not go anywhere. So I moved to the right, got a clear view of the area of the tree he was in. Sure enough, he stuck his head out from behind the tree trunk, I aimed over him and popped him. I had turned the power on the scope all the way down and the range on the front objective down as low as it would go, I was able to clearly see that squirrel. The squirrel was so close and then up in a tree, I knew I needed to aim over him.

So six squirrels, in about 15 minutes, four from the blind, two at near point blank. That 17 HMR is one heck of a squirrel gun. Works good for coons also, but I have not felt like staying up and waiting for them to show up.

Dude! That's a guns smoking beat down on them! Good eating. I wish I could find more places to hunt squirrels with mine.

I dropped one free hand with a head shot with my 17 during duck season. Paced off about 60 yards. Personal best squirrel shot.

Squirrel hunting with the 17 is so fun!

I have been shooting squirrels with my 17 HMRs for quite a while. Where we used to live, there was a oak tree that I shot two or three out of that was 80 yards from the house. Each of those kills were months apart, not inside of 15 minutes, like yesterday.
