I have a question about this rifle

This is a Savage Axis in 223. I added a Boyd's stock and topped it with a Vortex Diamondback 4-12x40. I should have paid more attention to the short eye relief and long length of pull. Notice how far back I had to move the scope. I would like the scope lower but the bell wont clear the barrel on low rings. I guess my only option is to cut the butt down and move the scope forward?

Cant get the picture to upload

      what is your LOP ?

what is the stock's LOP ? … normal is considered around 13.5"

when shouldering the stock, does the rifle fit well and feel comfortable ?

the scope has an ocular adjustment on the eyepiece which can be fine tuned based on the scope location.

you should consider other scope options (longer tube) before cutting down the stock

Specs on that scope show an eye relief of about 3 inches - which is fine for a light recoiling round.

But if you go with a scope with 4 inches of eye relief, you should be able to move that scope an inch forward.

Beautiful stock - it'd be a shame to do anything to it.

I dont know what mine is. Never bothered to measure it before. Not even sure exactly how. The LOP on this stock is 3.75. That's what I got because it was "standard." It wasnt until this issue arose that I noticed the LOP on my other rifles is a little shorter.

I hate to do anything to the stock. It just feels kind of awkward. I have to lift my head instead of keeping it firmly on the stock. The rifle shoots great. It's a tack driver.

I had an Axis in .223 and it too was a tack driver - and with the cheapest Wolf ammo I could find, no less.

            Now my son has it.

My Boyd’s thumbhole stock was too long (and too heavy)
I cut it down to fit and then put the plastic stock back on later.
Extension Rings are the answer as mentioned above.

Big pig, so you ended up scrapping your Boyd's stock? Did cutting it down not help enough?

Did you mean 13.75” LOP? 3.75 is nowhere close to right.

If lifting the head is the problem. Ditch the rail.

I'm confused. Is the stock too long for you or is it a situation where you can't get a good cheek weld with your stock / scope setup?

how are you shouldering the stock ? I prefer to rest my lower jaw on the monte carlo cheek rest. If your upper jaw bone is touching the stock your head and line of sight is to low. You want very little facial contact with the stock. If your thumbhole grip is to tight and your face is buried into the check rest it will affect accuracy. Gently hold the rifle and shoot free recoil, your shoulder should absorb all the recoil - with a .223, there should be very little

                              Mike D- yes its 13.75

Wayspr- Its kinda both. I'm not getting a good cheek weld. I want the scope lower for that reason but I cant because of a combination of the eye relief & LOP. I had to move the scope back pretty far which would cause the bell of the scope to contact the barrel.

DWA- I would like to ditch the rail but I havent found another base for the Axis. Can you suggest something I could try?

Blake- I will have to shoulder the rifle later to review that but I dont think I have my head too low.
