Trouble Mailing Firearms via the USPS?

If anyone has questions or needs info, I have been clearing out stuff in the shop and came across the original letter from the USPS in response to my question about legality after I was denied service at our local PO. If you would like a copy, shoot me a PM with your e-mail address and I'll send it to you--4 pages.

I guess the quarantine stuff is producing some good---getting things cleared, cleaned out, and straightened.

To simplify, anyone can mail long guns via USPS. They can go individual to individual within *most* states (Texas being one), but must go to an FFL if shipping out of state or to a resident of another state. Only FFLs can ship pistols via USPS and must go dealer to dealer and PS Form 1508 must be filed at the time of shipping. I believe all USPS firearms shipments require a signature, however I know pistols do.

Send it ups from an actual ups location (hub). Not a ups store. Ups stores are at the owners discretion. They have nothing to do w actual ups.

I've never had an issue with usps. They don't ask.

Since I always insure mine, I tell them it's a firearm. They don't even bat an eye, and I live in the inner city. I think it just depends on the people at your post office.

Yeah, definitely. I've had guys at UPS stores give me a hard time even about shipping parts like a barrel or stock. The UPS hubs are much easier to deal with though.

I was one that chimed in saying it was illegal. According to regs it isn't, but I had to go to 3 different usps locations a couple of weeks ago to ship a lever action within the state of texas. Finally found one that understood the law.

That's why having a copy of this documentation can save a bunch of driving around----just ask the dummy at the counter to go get the postmaster---and show them the letter.

I needed this 3 weeks ago while I tried to ship a handgun slide at the usps office in poolville....some dyke wasn’t having it. Needless to say she was power hungry that day. She called 3 different superiors and all told her I needed to present my ffl. All because she wasn’t being clear on what I was shipping. Finally I called usps inspector and he talked to her and put her in place. Needless to say I didn’t ship the slide from there that day.
