    Custom 6.5 PRC Rifle Advice

I am getting ready to put a deposit down and start building a 6.5 PRC. I am thinking about going with the Defiance Tenacity short action with a Wyatt’s extend PRC mag box. Does anyone have any experience with this set up? Did you experience any of the feeding or cycling issues you see people talk about? I’m going to shoot Berger bullets.

The gunsmith who is going to build it suggested building it on a long action, sounds interesting, I just haven’t heard of anyone running a 6.5 PRC on a long action. Obviously these guys build them and know what they are talking about but I wanted to see if anyone out there is running it on a long action and how it’s operating?

The people I have talked to are 50/50, and some have no experience running it on a long action, but a few say it won’t work on a short. This is my only 6.5 PRC and want to make sure to get it right, so what’s everyone’s experience with them and what actions are you running?

Lastly, I’m building off a 24” barrel, is everyone running a 1:8 or 1:7.5 twist rate? Again, I’m going to shoot Berger Bullets, hopefully the 156 go but if not then the 140 gr. Which ever shoots better.

If you are going to reload and want a short action, take a look at 6.5 saum.

I went 7.5 twist on proof sendero, in a long action to take advantage of today’s longer bullets. Using Berger’s stability calculator a 7.5 twist should work for the 140s

7.5 twist on 26” Bart 3B, long action big horn TL3. Can take full advantage of the longer bullets.

6.5 prc was really designed to be on a medium action, imo.

Maybe, but even with a Wyatt's box it's going to be extremely tight.

APR built mine on a long action. Feeds great and doesn't need a muzzle brake. Recoil is less than a 270 to me. 24" 1-8 Muller works barrel

APR is who is going to build mine, those guys are absolutely first class! I have asked 100 questions and they have without hesitation answered every one. I also trust their opinion and they are starting to make me lean towards a long action even though I was hoping to make a short action.

They said if I only shoot factory ammo, the short action would be fine, but a long action is better for hand loaders. I do not reload, but I have a guy that custom load ammo for me, I guess kind of like custom factory ammo.

I am torn between the short and long action so I wanted to see if anyone that owns one has any advice.

Looks like the long action is in the lead right now but still getting guys saying a short action would be fine which gets me conflicted again.

                  Droptine,
That is a fine looking rifle, do you have any other pictures of it? No issues with the long action, pros and any cons?

No issues with the long action. It can be done with a short, but no reason to not go with a long action.....unless that tiny bit of extra weight is a big deal. Opens up more options for longer bullets down the road.

My dad and I each have one. Both long actions. Thats the route I would go if I were you. But I'm not a guy that cares about the couple oz or longer throw.

I hope you got in on the APR group buy.

They’re building me a 6.5 prc. They also recommended to go with the long action. So I am.

This is great feedback, it’s really starting to look like the long action is the way to go.

I wasn’t able to get in on the group special, but looked like a great deal. Alamo is doing my build I’ll just have to pay a little more for it. Really like that I hear about the 6.5 PRC and it’s looking like the long action is the way to go. I’m curious about the Defiance Deviant I’m the XM size. Sounds perfect for the 6.5 PRC. If I can’t do that then it sounds like I should go with long action.
