Real world 7mm velocities short and long...

Looking at options for a new build, plan to stick in 284. Will go Proof or Carbon six for sure. What are some real world velocities for calibers such as 7mm-08 AI, 7mm WSM, 7SAUM, 280AI.

Don’t know if I want to be looking at the big heavies, may just target the 162g bullets like ELDX. I don’t want to have any longer barrel than what is necessary for that caliber. Really would like to stay 20-24”, not sure how that works with the WSM or SAUM.

My brother is seeing around 2800 out of a 7-08ai 24” tube 160 class bullet.

I’ve always been partial to the
7mm Rem mag.

A healthy dose of 4831 & a 160 gn
Nosler Partition gets me 2989 from a 26” barrel.

Got several big magnums already, wanting to do something outside of that realm. Will be more of an all purpose hunting rifle.

Why is the 284 win not a choice? I have a gunsmith friend that is having good luck with a 284 out to over 1000 yards.

I'm getting 2900 with a 168 Berger out of my APR 280 AI with a 25" barrel and i didn't lean on it. Shot great with single digit ES and SD. it's a hammer for sure. Not in your barrel length range but just my experience with the calibers listed

I'm getting 3400 with 120's out of the 280ai...I have a 7.21 Firebird / 7mm Lazzeroni that is right under 4000fps with 120's.

280ai is 26"
7mm Lazz is 30"

65 gr of 4831sc behind a 140 gr combined technology silver tip out of 22 inch 280ai is getting 2995 average.

Following please stay on topic 20-24 inch barrel experience. There’s plenty of info for longer barrels and the op has a 26” tube already. Thanks for this thread was wondering the same thing.

Why not the 7x57, 2680fps with factory ammo and 2850fps with hand loads.

Edit: 22" barrel.
