A leather or nylon easily adjustable sling for shooting, a rubber "Claw" sling to hang a gun on your shoulder. The only ones I have ever had that wouldn't slip.

Me too. I am interested in one of the biathlon backpack style slings but I’ve never used one.

Depends on the use.
The Claw is hard to beat for a hiking gun.
For a to/from the blind with a nice wood stock rifle a handmade leather sling will get the job done and compliment the rifle. There are a billion options depending on what you like.

Quake Claw Slings are the best I've tried if you want something comfortable that you don't have to worry about slipping.

The Claw is on my shotgun, 17, and 204.

Went with a fat cobra braided paracord on my bow and AR15. both are light enough I don't miss the cushion, and handy if I ever need it in the field. On my bow it has a loop and tiny clip on each end that slips through limb pockets.
