    Mauser 308 Conversion

I am looking to covert a k98 yugo capture with cracked stock non-matching #s. Does anybody have gunsmith recommendations in the DFW / Greenville area?

Personally I would fined a tapped receiver and build off of that, not much on the rifle you’re going to use currently but it still has history. Just my 2¢

For a barrel, install, finish of metal, bolt mods, tapping of receiver, and a stock- You can buy 2 or 3 Ruger American or Savage Axis rifles. Been there, won't be going back.

I converted a couple of Mausers to modern cartridges about 10 years back. Did everything myself except for headspacing which requires a lathe. Action wrenches are not too expensive and are probably the only tools you don't already have. I estimate that I spent $500 on each plus optics. Probably had 100 hours of my time invested but it was a labor of love. Converting a Mauser is definitely not a way to save money but if you want to play gunsmith it is a lot of fun.

It seems once you start modifying any firearm you can quickly invest much more in it than you’ll ever get back.

I’ve done a few Mauser conversions. One 22-250 and one 260 Rem. I had some cheap barrels and bought Boyds stocks. I have all the tools to do it in house. I did it to learn the process on something that I was not out a lot if it did not go well. By doing some careful machine work both will shoot 1/2” groups with the cheap barrels. If you have to have someone do the work for you it’s a losing financial deal. You will never be able to sell it for what you have invested. If you want to do it for your own satisfaction knock yourself out.

Didn't know before but I see Winchester has brought back the control round feed on the Model 70s. I think I need one of those..
