    Camp M1 Garand purchasing?

I’ve wanted to buy one for the last 32 years just to own one, any one bought one of the rack grade or field grade to restore? Or just buy the select grade that has been redone by camp ?

Just buy a Service or Special. I’d buy a Service.

I’m not gonna shoot any matches I want a piece of history but a functioning one that I can take out and shoot. I also would like to find a 1903 Springfield

They will all function and shoot, the biggest difference will be cosmetic and matching parts or not. It's been a lot of years ago but I bought a field grade if I remember correctly and it surprised me when I got it.

I remember 32 years ago when I saw them for sale in the shotgun news for sale a lot cheaper than they are now, should’ve bought several then along with the ‘03

I bought a service grade and it is awesome. The only thing funky about the Garand is that you will need to buy grease to properly maintain it. It needs grease on the op rod and bolt at a minimum.

This is the deal with a CMP rifle:

You may (will) get a rifle that is put together out of a bunch of parts. However, it is done by someone that knows what they’re doing, and it will fire and be reasonably accurate, and will cost less than you trying to piece one together and hope all the parts fit correctly. It’s not the $1200 gun show special that Bubba and his two buddies stuck together in Bubba’s garage.

You can put a little note in your application packet saying what you want the rifle to look like/what your intended use is, and they may send you more or less what you ask for, although there are no guarantees.

Buy one in usable condition and you won’t regret it. Like you said, they aren’t getting any cheaper.

Remember that you cant use a lot of the modern 3006 ammo in a garand. I know Hornady makes some or the best option is to load your own. You can also buy an adjustable gas plug that will allow to shoot any safe modern 3006 ammo. If you get one you really should shoot some matches with it, they are tons of fun. I have even 3 gunned with mine a few times

I’ve got an 03 that was passed down to me. It’s been over 10 years since I shot it but pulled it out yesterday rearranging things to make more space and snapped a pic. (Try to ignore the carpet, my gun room is in the unfinished part of the basement).

Really nice looking weapon, I hunted with a buddy of mine who had one, but yours is on a whole different level
