Need info Win 1873 new model lever

I went to Abels guns in Huntsville to buy this gun in 45 long colt but neither of the people behind the counter could tell me if it will take the plus P stuff for hunting. I figured it being of new construction it would. Does any of you have insight to this for me. If not i geuss i will try Winchestor monday.

I think contacting the manufacturer would be best.. im sure it would be fine but maybe they can give you some certainty or say no way

I dont have one to try but i'd like one!

Definitely call the manufacturer. The 1873 was never considered a strong action and even with modern steels may not be strong enough. I know the recent manufactured rolling blocks and trapdoors won't take high pressures because of their design. If you want a lever action of that period that will take hot loads look at the Rossi 1892.

The 1873 is a toggle link and while it might stand up for a while, it will start loosening up. I've got 2 1892's and they handle the 45 colt (44 mag level) loads fine.

Agree with the above, don't hotrod the 73. If you need more power (ruger loads) then 94s, either winchester or marlin is the war to go. If you need power than that, a 92 winchester or clone is the stoutest old style lever gun
