    300 win mag, reduced loads?

Anyone ever downloaded the WM to 308 levels? Where I will hunt with it, full power loads are waaaayyyyyy overkill. Obvious answer is to buy a new gun, but I like a challenge.

A quick use of the googler resulted in this from the big H. This was after looking at several threads on popular shooting and hunting sites which said to buy a 308.

I WILL SAY USE EXTREME CAUTION WITH A REDUCED LOAD.

Due to the limited powder and the way it will lay in the cartridge like a trough extreme pressure spikes can occur.

I would be leary of unproven loads but would look more into what Hodgen has to say. Perhaps even giving them a call. Of course this is all on the chance that you have a book with this specific powder listed for the 300wm.

I had seen this one as well. Likely what I will do. Then again I might try some of the managed recoil loads that Remington offers and see how well they shoot. This gun shoots well enough with the cheap federal full power loads (0.5 moa) I haven’t looked into reloading for it yet.

The advice to buy a 308 is good advice I run into this question lot when clients ask about subsonic 308 loads for use with suppressor.

You're in essence, using the 300 Win Mag for a purpose that it was not designed for.

My normal advice is to tell people to buy a 300 Blackout. In the case of the 300 Win Mag the advice would be just get a 308.

Why are you trying to use a reduced load in a 300 Win Mag anyway?

What kind of velocities are you looking to get?

My wife has claimed my Grendel as her deer rifle. Leaves me with a gap for a hill country whitetail rifle. I’ve got the 300 in the safe. I have a 6.5 CM I could shoot, but it is set up for PRS, long and heavy and unwieldy in a tight box blind. I’m trying to convince her she needs a bolt gun in 6.5 Grendel. Got so many other $$ projects upcoming she’s not budging on the budget..... The WM is just too much gun for these deer.

I think buying reduced recoil loads would be the safest option.

Safe is never any fun though.

My interest in running reduced loads was to be able to spend more trigger time with a particular rifle and maybe hunt deer with a light bullet without sending it at 3500+ FPS.

Are the deer too dead when you recover them?

If you have spent the money on a PRS rifle I’m assuming you reload. Just run a minimum load of RL-22 behind a 168 Speer gold dot or 165 Ballistic Tip. Either will jack some critters up

TC Compass. Cheap. Accurate (so far). Lightweight. Kicks like a freaking mule without a brake on it.
