    Remington action rant...

Got 3 Remington actions sitting in the shop for minor surgery and 2 of the 3 aren't worth putting on a rifle after a standard action job. They both have a ton of slop and look like they were timed (or the lack of) by some guy that just quit heroine cold turkey and probably won't cam worth a dang. FYI, all 3 of these are newer actions. I could dust off the old torch and TIG rig but I'd prefer to send that out to the boys that have perfected that. Guess I'll call Kampfield and see what their lead is like. Don't know if the dude in Alaska is still doing it but any leads would be appreciated. Thanks for listening and rant over...

Robert, should have my order in this week for your APR actions as well.

I have heard the same about the newer Remington's. That is sad to hear, because i have 2 older model remington's that shoot great.
Wanted my next purchase to be a remington as well but looking at other manufactures now.

The guy in Alaska is still in business.

I sent my dad's bolt to him earlier this year.

Seems like normal operating procedure for Remington these days

I’ve got a Remington 6.8 spc that won’t hold the bullets in the bottom metal, so I just put in 1 bullet. When I try to close the bolt to inject the bullet the darn bullet fly’s out.

What do I need to do?

Yup. I hear there higher end rifles are still great, but I won't buy another Remington anything until I see a solid streak of good reviews.

The new 700 actions can be total POS. It is sad after having produced a standard for so long.

Uhhh Huhhh..... I was doing 4-5 of those a day........every day..... for waaaay too long! I feel your pain, brother. I'm averaging less than 3 a week now. And I'm fine with that

We were rejecting about 6 out of 10 for the timing issues alone, but still had to end up re-timing the ones that were "close" just to have enough to keep building on. At least you can see the timing issue before you invest any time into it. The real cussing starts when you get a crooked bolt head or receiver threads that take more than .020 to clean up. So far the shop record for receiver threads stands at .047!!

The funny part is after seeing hundreds of them come across the lathe, you get pretty good at spotting trends. A lot of folks search out the "older" ones thinking they are higher quality. The only thing I can see is the older ones are "smoother" because of the better finish and have better primary on average. Most of them are train wrecks in the other dimensions compared to the newer ones. One thing is for sure, finding a straight one with good primary from any era is like hitting the lottery.

Are yours the "gloss" or SPS finish?

Thanks Slick8, thought he was still doing it.

Always appreciate the input Robert. Good Lord, .047?! Was there any receiver left?? Haha Both are SPS, one matte and one stainless. Just trying to decide whether I want to tell the guy we need to send it out or just not even mess with it. I don’t mind cleaning it up for him but I’m going to suggest we go with one of your new actions. With all of the money he’ll have trying to make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, he can spend a couple hundred more and have a full custom. No brainer to me but who knows.

I'm learning this! I just tore down my stainless 700 to blueprint and rebarrel. It was a good shooting 7mm-08 manufactured in 1999. The finish on the inside of the action is aweful! I will soon know far how out of "round"it actually is. Hopefully it's savable!

Definitely hoping to get in on the APR Gen 2 early order and start a custom with a silk purse instead of trying to make one from a sows ear! As kck stated, thats a no brainer!

I bought a model 7 last year. The fully dipped predator model. Seems to lock up tight and shoots pretty good. I can honestly say I have always thought they were the benchmark of an accurate off the shelf rifle. I hate to say but that bird has flown.

I've got 3 700s that are 10+ yrs old but I won't buy a newer one until the reviews turn back positive. Ive heard the X Mark triggers suck too.

Anyone with a “junk” 700 action they don’t want can send them to me. I’ll take care of them for you.

Last week I shot a 1/2 “ group with a cheap 770 .243 bought new in 2013, the same gun in .270 I can hardly keep on the paper.
