I have a GAP in a 6.5 PRC and obviously I’m sold on it as I chose to build a rifle in it. Low recoil, and crazy accurate. I have 80 rounds down it and it and have aired to 1200 thus far. Crazy accurate! I have the exact same build being built in a 300 PRC. I’m a big fan of the PRC concepts.

A good buddy of mine downed a 280 class bull at 718 with a factory Seekins Havak running the 143 Precision Hunter. He’s been a LR shooter for quite some time, but decided to give the factory rifle and ammo a chance for a lightweight hunting build. He’s been very pleased with the caliber.

1200 is more than sufficient for elk with someone that knows how to pull the trigger. I wouldn’t have any issues taking a Creedmoor if my SAUM wasn’t an option.

For factory ammo, really hard to beat 6.5 creedmoor. Recoil is very mild on them, .243 range. Going up to 7mm class, 7mm-08 is a great round. Slightly more recoil but you there are factory options to mitigate that. Hornady Custom Lite has some nice offerings for the young shooters. 120 grain managed recoil loads should be very mild.

I’m not trying to be a t u r d. I just don’t understand why people have such a disdain for the 6.5. Yeah it’s a popular round and everybody and their dog has jumped on the bandwagon. That doesn’t mean it isn’t a great round. I have met and talked to so many people who don’t like the 6.5 creedmoor just because it’s become so popular. That’s a ridiculous reason to not like a cartridge.

OP, both the 6.5 and the 7mm-08 will do what you need them to do. Both great rounds.

Sounds like 7-08 is a good option for you. I just built a 6.5 prc. The rifle is accurate but no field use yet so I can’t say definitively how it performs on breathing targets

Oh it will perform excellent on breathing targets and at distance. I’m running my 6.5 saum around 3025 and hammered my sheep at 515yd. This will be my do all rifle for North America. Sold my 300rum

You’ve got plenty of speed to gain as well if you wish. 3025 is pretty light from the SAUM. I’ve seen several rifles over 3200. Currently I’m getting 3140 being somewhat easy on mine out of a 23” tube.
