    Winchester Model 12 problem

I have an old 16ga that my grandfather purchased in the ‘50s. It’s in working order but not great shape so I’m trying to clean it up a little.

An issue I’m running into is once it dry fires, the pump doesn’t always cycle the bolt without needing a slight jerk forward first. When it does this, if push the pump out a little I can hear a very quiet click inside the receiver. It’s then that the pump and bolt can be thrown back easily. It does this about 50% of the time. The rest of the time it functions fine.

I also have a lot of play in the pump after dry firing when it hangs up like this. It can come back a good 2” without moving the bolt at all.

I think it’s something about the slide bar-bolt connection but can’t find anything online about this issue. Any tips would be appreciated.

Maybe it’s been reassembled incorrectly. There’s a couple good YouTube videos on the model 12.

Skip the dry firing and get some snap caps?

On a model 12 you have to bump it forward a bit to get it to cycle, just the way it was made. If I am correct that is part of the disconnect, you can hold the trigger down and slam fire it like a trombone.

That’s what I was thinking as well. Most pump guns are this way. 870’s, mossbergs, etc. You don’t notice it firing because the recoil impulse makes you disengage it.

            True statement...
I have model 97 that operates the same way.

Those model 12's are adjustable to take that slack out. A gunsmith can adjust it for you. The slide is worn and that's why it's not releasing the bolt. If it's adjusted right, if you hold the gun up vertical and pull the trigger on an empty chamber, the slide should release the bolt without moving the slide forward.
If you want to look at the adjusting threads, you can push the pin on the end of the magazine through to the other side and rotate it and pull it forward out of the frame of the gun, then you can twist the barrel/pump assembly 90 degrees from the frame and separate the two halves of the gun, you will see the interrupted threads and theres a screw that allows you to "tighten" those threads in tiny increments... will make a very old worn out model 12 work like a brand new one...

I love model 12's. The little bump forward is normal.
