What is a smoth and wesson 686-2 worth?

I have a friend that needs some money and im going to buy it from him. I want to give him a price thats fair for me and him. Honestly ill probably sell it one of these days and dont want to lose a lot but dont want to rip him off either. Its in like new condition. He bought it new in the 70's and shot 6 rounds out of it.

Edit... why cant I edit my fat finger spelling in the title?

I agree around $600 to $700. I weouldn't sale it or shoot it though. If it's like new and you just lock it in the safe and leave it, it's gonna go up in value over the years. They're not as easy to come by in that good of condition these days.

I think it went on the market in the early 80s FWIW. I was just getting into law enforcement and I think a majority of officers still carried revolvers. We almost couldn’t get our hands on one.

If seen them at gun shows for $650.
$600 sounds like a fair friend price.

Check gunbroker.com. At least it will give you an idea of what they going for.

The 586 came out about 1980, the stainless 686 sometime after that. depending on condition the $650 number is a good place to start.

The 586 was introduced in 1980, the 686 stainless in 1981. The 686-2 in 1987, it changed hammer nose, bushing and associated parts.

Older ones without the stupid lock are more desirable. Prices on new lock versions don’t apply.

I'm seeing sold guns running from $700 to over $1k in the excellent to nib / old stock.

686 started in 81 so I'm guess it's a pre lock. In good shape $600ish?
You can buy a brand $750ish at Bud.

                            God bless!

Love my 686+. If it’s in good condition, I would think that $600 would be fair. As stated, check gun broker for recent sale prices.
