    Best 6mm Remington load?

Looking for the best all around load for my 6mm. I’ve been shooting factory 95 gr ballistic tips from Hornady and am not happy with their performance on pigs. I’d prefer to stay with something under 100 grains. I plan to use it as an all around carry gun for coyotes, pigs, and an occasional deer. I like fast so the lighter the better but I also want pigs and deer going down in a normal manner.

    Any recommendations?

I load for a couple buds but they are 1/14 twists where hot 70gr loads from the 6mm shines:..you would need to be open for this if your rig falls in line with application

I used the 87 and 100 grain Win. Power Point in my 243 and was quite impressed, they can only be better driven a little faster.

Thanks - mine is an older BDL which I'm pretty sure is a 1 in 10 twist. I should probably just sacrifice a little velocity and go with the 100 grain Seirra spitzers and call it good.

I've been loading 44 grains of IMR 4350 behind 100 gr. Hornady spire point FB's for over 40 years that shoot same hole out of about every 700 BDL and 600 mohawk I ever tried them in... That load it hot and the new edition Hornady reloading manuals do not even go that high with that powder... I think when I worked it up, I was using something like 2nd or 3rd edition of the manual... Never had any pressure issues with the load. Been the death of many a deer and hog as well as a few yotes and a cat or 2...

I shoot the Seirra 95 grain ballistic tip bullets out of my Ruger 77 6mm. The Seirra has a solid base unlike the Hornady. I have been pleased with their performance.

do you hand load with interest in specific bullets and powders , or just looking for factory box ammo recs ?

I load the Sierra 85 gr HPBT (sierra stock # 1530). When I hunted in Ozona 10-15 yrs ago, I shot a bunch of deer and javelina out to 400 yds and all were DRT.

25 yrs ago I was introduced to an older benchrest shooter that lived in West Texas (Uvalde ??). He had a permit to shoot deer year round (crop depredation). He strictly uses the Sierra 85 HPBT and has killed over 3,000 deer using a custom 6mm Rem. Ever since he shared his real world experience with me, that's my "goto" bullet of choice for the .243 caliber cartridges.

I settled on the same powder and charge weight but use a 100 gr Sierra Bt.been shooting in a Rem 600 for 40+ years with no problems.

you are going to be disappointed,, lighter to get faster is bad when it comes to critters like hogs.... might as well drive a motorcycle in a demolition derby,, it lighter and faster too

something like the nosler partition is the best all around,, so do you want best all around or just faster, because they are not the same

Which bullet are you currently using? You said Hornady Balistic tip. I dont think that's right

                      Great info - thanks Blake.

I've done just enough benchrest shooting to say that I've done it so I do plan to hand load. Upon the advice of the shooter that got me into it, I ordered some 100gr Seirra Spitzers yesterday. Upon my own craving, I added some Sierra 80gr spitzers to the cart.

Your facts can't be disputed and I'm interested in trying the Sierra 85 HPBT. Have you shot many pigs 150lbs and up with it?

Good point. I just love shooting the gun and will solely shoot the 100gr Sierra Spitzers unless I can get a smaller bullet and load that will have the same point of impact at 100yds. If I can do that, I'll shoot a smaller bullet for varmints.

Hornady 95gr SST. If there is a difference in it and a ballistic tip, please let me know. I tend to generalize soft point, hollow point, and polymer tip but that's probably not fair, given the various technologies in today's bullets.

I shoot the same load in mine as well. It is accurate and deadly.

I used to shoot the Sierra bullets, but had too many come apart with jacket fragments on body shot animals in the meat. The hornady bullets have a thicker jacket, especially with the spire points. I switched to them in my hunting loads for the 6mm loads as well as my .270 loads and got much better bullet performance. Maybe some of the newer designs are improved in the Sierras, but their spitzers are no bueno for me. They are plenty accurate, but just not tough enough on deer size animals out of rifles calibers... I did shoot sierra bullets in my Model 29 Smith and they performed very well with the thinner jackets in hand gun loads, even rifle caliber loads in Contender barrels (14" or Super 16)
