I have three ARs I use for hunting. First one, is a AR carbine, in 5.56, I have changed out the trigger, stock, forearm and pistol grip. I have found a bullet that works very well, in the gun, so that's all I have used for years. It's a Speer 52 gr. hollow point. I have killed a lot of coyotes with the gun, with that bullet, then one buck and a big boar, coons, ECT.
After the success with that rifle, I decided I wanted a more powerful AR, that would shoot larger diameter, heavier bullets. I intended to put together a 6.5 Grendel, but got talked into a 270 AR, which is a wildcat round, that can produce 270 Winchester ballistics from a much smaller case. It spits a .277 130 gr. Sierra Game King at 2850 fps., from my rifle. Other guys get as much as 3150 fps, with longer barrels. I have only used it for hunting mule deer, I have killed two with it. That gun started out using common Mil spec upper, lower and bolt carrier, then a 20" 270 AR barrel. I later replaced the upper and lower with billet side charge pieces and a side charge bolt. I also replaced the pistol grip, I found a cheap plastic grip, that I liked, so I replaced the ERGO rubber grip.
The last AR, I pieced together, with another side charge billet upper and billet lower, and side charge bolt. That gun I chose a 16" 458 SOCOM barrel. Then most of the rest of the gun, was left over parts. The forearm came from my other AR carbine, the stock was pulled off of a buddy's gun, the grip was from my 270 AR. The scope mount was also originally on my 270 AR. So far, I have taken it hunting multiple times, but have not had the chance to shoot anything other than targets. I shot some cedar logs with it, just to see how the 350 gr. soft points worked on hard targets. It's pretty deadly on cedar logs. I plan on this being one of my main hunting rifles, I really like the round and the gun.Last edited by RifleBowPistol; 08-16-2020, 02:52 PM.
