    Potentially Dumb Question

I got a sniper hog light for my AR in Ruger 204 and I am mounting it on the bottom rail towards the front of the barrel. This might be a potentially stupid question but I am going to ask it anyway. Is there rule of thumb on how far back you should mount accessories from the end of the barrel? I do not have a brake on it so I would think that most of the force is going down range and not backwards but I figured I would make sure. Right now I have it mounted 2-3" back from the end of the barrel.

        Great question.

        I have an AR 10 in .308

I have 2 positions on my rifle to mount my Sniper Hawg Light 66LRX.

Each has their pros and cons for ME

        Position 1:
Under my rail as far forward as possible.
        Pro:
I can still get my hand on the rail.
I can still use my monopole. I like my new shooting in stick just in front of the Mag Well.
If you're using the dimmer it's easy to reach.

        Con:
If sitting on the ground and the grass is tall the light will reflect off it and wash the scope out.
It's a little akward to be able to focus the beam from flood to spot.

        Position 2:
On top of my scope. On front of the front base.

        Pro:
It's easy to get to adjust the Windage & Elevation.
It doesn't wash out the scope as bad when sitting on the ground in the tall grass.
It's easy to adjust the focus of the beam, flood to spot.

        Con:
I'm tall, sitting in my ground blind I have to make sure the lights outside the window or it light up the wall. When I do that and turn to scan I can hear the zipper rub on the light.
If I put it on the bottom it seems to catch on the window.

The picture is of it on the bottom.

Thanks for the reply. Also let me clarify what I am asking. Is there a rule of thumb on how far from the end of the barrel you are supposed to mount any accessory so it does not get damaged from the force of the gas coming out of the end of the barrel? Like I said I do not have a break on it so I would think being 2-3" back is sufficient but I have not shot it yet and I don't want to ruin my new set up.

I've never even considered that potential for gas damage you are thinking about? Personally the son's and I use bipods on all our AR's (don't always use them) so obviously we mount lights either on the scope or to the "left side" in the pic rails. To me it makes no sense to mount the light towards the end of the barrel if you have the furniture to do elsewhere.

On a side note, my "military sniper son" will get on me from putting too much hardware on the AR's as it will throw off accuracy. His stand, not really mine, but he's taking routine shots much farther than many of us.

            Enjoy!!

I can mount it on the sides but the windage and elevation mount puts it out a good distance from the gun. I have a night vision for the scope which is already tall and with the mounted on top of the scope would be crazy to heavy. I want to mount the light on the bottom as far forward as I can so I can get my tripod underneath it and still have room to operate the switch on the back. I am pretty sure I am worried about nothing but I wanted to make sure. The 204 is a pretty hot round so I was just worried about all the gas coming out the end of the barrel.

So long as the lens is behind the brake you’ll be fine.

I personally prefer my lights mounted at the 2:00 position looking down the barrel from the muzzle end. Gets them out of the way and marks activation with my left hand easier

Since there is no brake, you could get away with the end of the flashlight slightly past the muzzle, but I would just mount it flush with it to be safe

Thanks for the help guys. I figured I was worrying about nothing but the last thing I wanted to do is destroy my $200 light with the first shot........
