A higher magnification zoom doesn’t make the crosshairs move any more than it would with a lower magnification. It just makes it more noticeable. The crosshairs is moving the exact same amount. I do agree with preferring the lower mag for hunting, but I like to be able to crank up the optic when needed. I’ve taken my hunting rifle past a mile, and went 5 for 5 with a true cold bore center punch at 1542. Get one that does both. I was running a Leupold MK6 3-18 at the time.

Good rings and a Nikon Monarch 4x-16x will do all you need it to do. All done for $300-$400

Trijicon or one of these leicas https://www.eurooptic.com/Leica-ER5-...ular-Sale.aspx

Never heard a complaint from either of them. I'd stay clear of Leupolds, Zeiss conquest or vortex but that's just my opinion. Good luck at the new place

$1200 is an incredible budget that could get you a near top-of-the-line optic.

For a sub-200 yard deer gun, I would personally spend $100 on rings/bases, $500 on the scope, and $600 on another gun.

3-9 is a great magnification range for general-purpose hunting. You could go 4-12 or 4-16 if you know you won’t ever shoot less than ~40 yards. If you will be shooting short range, a 2-7 or even 1-4 or 1-6 could work.

Objective lense size is another choice you will need to make. Low objectives are good for light-weight guns that you won’t use near dark. Higher objectives “gather” more light at dawn and dusk but make for heavier/bulkier scopes. I like 44mm for all-purpose.

Make that 3 votes for this combo.

Only other one I would recommend would be a Swarovski Z3 4-12x44 in Talley lightweight one pice rings.

Please don’t put a cheap scope like a Vortex on that nice rifle.

I like a 4-12x range over a 3-9x range for a hunting. There's little difference on the bottom end but a fair bit on the top end. With your budget, you can get a lot of scope. Don't skip on the rings and bases. Crummy rings and bases have caused problems for more than a few high end scopes.

Cabalas has a Zeiss conquest HD 5-25x50 Rz 800 on sale for $799. Or a vortex viper 6-24 x50 for $649. I have the Zeiss and no complaints.

Zeiss conquest isn't terrible but the viper is probably the worse low light scope I've ever looked through in the "mid tier" category. Owned the 3x14 conquest and it was pretty good for the money but I definitely wouldn't buy again. Best to try them all out or go look through a few buddies Scopes at low light.

Your only using it occasionally. I wouldn’t drop a grand on a scope, that is to used once or twice. Buy quality bases and rings. A 3 - 9 x 40 Leupold is more than adequate for you.

Honestly I've found a 3.5x10 Leupold VX3i to be a great HUNTING scope. If that's what you want out of it with the CDS dial you get the range you like. Sometimes I find to much scope can be a problem but a 10x to 12x seems to be perfect for 100-400 yard shots and keeps the weight down as well

I just bought a Nikon black 1000 4x16x50 For a .308. I’ve only taken the gun to the range to sight it in but was impressed with the glass.

Ok after reading this let me clear up how I came up with that budget... the guns is $0.00 so I figured if I was to buy me a brand new rifle with a decent scope I'd spend about $1200.00.. Also I'm not worried about weight or bulkyness.. I won't be carrying this thing around much. AlSo after reading these comments one important thing will be low light capabilities..
