    Father and Son Memory

Last week I took my 11 year old son Jack to Roewe Outfitters in Rochester, TX. Our hunt started with a nighttime hog chase with the dogs, a first for both of us. Jack bravely volunteered to be first to get after one with a short spear. It did not take us 10 minutes and the dogs were on a 230 lb tusker. With some help from Roewe himself Jack dispatched the pig in short order. This type of hunting isn’t for everyone but I had to admire his sand for getting in close to that monster!

We then turned our attentions to a whitetail buck. Jack shot an antler-less deer on 12/29/16, his first, so we had our sights set on some antlers this Go Around. His buck showed up after we had passed on a large boar and several does. It was the perfect buck for him and he couldn’t have been happier with his take. Growing up we were taught to shoot the deer in the neck. It’s hit or miss. Save the meat, my Grandfather would always say. Coincidently he took this 6 point the same day he took the one last year, 12-29.

Hoping the videos and pics post correctly. May have to post videos separately. I don’t have a tripod so forgive the shakiness. Hog video was shot by one of the guides. Big Dad/Son memories. So happy for my boy and the man he is becoming. As you will see, Jack was pretty happy too!

Excellent! Hunt with your kids today, instead of for your kids tomorrow.

You are correct! Long way to reminisce and answer your question...That was my first rifle, a gift from my Uncle. He was always up to entrepreneurial pursuits, like being an FFL dealer, and some how built a collection of them. I think Christmas 1985 he pulls in to my Aunt's house, which was next door. He lines up 8 of these things with Bushnell scopes and rings btw, and goes from oldest to youngest, pic'em. Mine is a 6mm (.244). Others were .270, .25-06, .30-06, .22 Hornet, maybe some others. There were 8 of us, aged 9 to 15, so it was a big moment in kid-dom. That weekend he helped me mount the scope and sight it in. That afternoon I killed my second buck. That gun has been "the loaner" to many a first time hunter at our place in GA. Lost count on how many critters it has taken. Thanks for asking...I hadn't thought about these things in many years!
