Need help with Ruger M77 trigger.

A buddy of mine asked me to adjust (lighten) the trigger on his Ruger M77, and finish sanding and seal his Boyd’s stock for it. Almost finished with the stock, and decided to see about the trigger this morning. I’ve worked on a few of my Rugers-77/17, and 77/22 mag and was able to lighten the triggers to around 2 pounds or so. His trigger assembly has an extra screw that doesnt loom familiar to me at all. Can’t seem to find an answer on the internet what this screw is doing there. Attached is a picture of the assembly and screw. Is this a factory trigger?

Man, I do lots of rifle work for myself and others but adjusting a trigger that you not sure of is dangerous and even worse on someone else’s rifle. HUGE liability your taking on for a favor IMO

I have a early 90's M77 and I was told by a reputable gunsmith, before he passed, that the pull cannot be adjusted/lightened..

Timney is your friend. I have installed several and it is easy and safe

Ok, after scouring the net, this trigger (M77 with tang safety) is very different from my 77/17. I’ll recommend to my buddy that he order an aftermarket trigger to replace it. BTW, the trigger measured at 5.5 pounds on my electronic fish/trigger weight scale, and had lots of creep to it. Pretty rough.

Don't even try to mess with that one. Only way to improve that thing is to stone the crap out of it. I've torn into just about every trigger out there and in my opinion the tang safety M77 is the worst one. I hate spending money on aftermarket triggers when I can work over the factory one but I'll freely admit you are better off putting in a Timney.

I have done several of those, and after you understand how it works they are very simple to adjust. I can get mine to 2 pounds safely all you need is a good Stone and some honing oil.

x2, but my gunsmith is still alive.

Trash, buy a Timney. I have an M77 and can speak from experience.
