Why is he steering you away from proof? Considering my 7 he built is one of the most accurate hunting rifles that's left his shop lol. But he hasn't seen the groups lol

He didn’t say anything bad, Matt. Just for my purposes there may not be enough advantage to justify the cost. He said that compared to the Proof, a Bartlein 3B would only be 4oz lighter and he gets just as much accuracy out of Bartleins. He also said that, because he shoots a lot and burns out barrels and swaps them, the Proof barrels are just too expensive for him. He recently built himself a VERY similar (almost identical) rifle and chose Bartlein 3B for it. Since I shoot almost every day (it’s nice having a range at the house, lol) that’s a concern for me as well. I was only interested in the Proof barrels because I thought they would be a lot lighter and significantly more accurate than what I normally use. I just can’t justify the extra $560 per barrel price for 4oz and equal accuracy. Especially when I’m getting 2-3 barrels made at once. If I tended to shoot 1” straight barrels and/or really long barrels I think the Proof barrels would be a better choice. I just meant that Clayton steered me away from Proof for MY build and for MY purposes.....he wasn’t saying he didn’t like them.
FWIW - I’m considering building a barrel in 6.5 Sherman Shortmag, possibly instead of 6.5 SAUM. The brass has to be formed or bought from the designer at a premium $3/case but man, it’s a friggin LZER! Lol! Around 3200fps with 140’s out of a 22” tube and short action. And, it’s more likely to work with the coming 155gr Bergers without having to shove the base back into the powder column. Clayton is really into building a 6.5SS and has worked with Rich Sherman in another rifle before, that turned out terrific. It was a Sherman and not a Sherman Shortmag. He thinks it’d be really interesting to compare it directly to the 6.5 SAUM. So, I may end up chambering barrels in 6.5 SAUM, 6.5 SS and 300wsm. Lol! There’s NO way I can afford to buy 3 Proof barrels on this build!

Also, for the DBM I had Clayton recently install an HS precision set up. 3 round mag for hunting and you can go bigger. I don't like the way the AI type DBMs rattle

Nick if you want to stay short action go with the 6.5 SAUM and 300WSM. Have them throat the 300WSM for 185 Bergers and be done with it.
On a hunting rig, I would do a Wyatt’s extended box and BDL style floor plate.
DBM is ok for bench or maybe competition shooting but I find them to get in the way on a hunting rig. They also tend to poke me in the back when carrying shouldered when stalking. There is also the (slight) possibility that your mag could accidentally come loose and fall out without you knowing.

I hear ya. If I wasn’t considering using it for some competition shooting I’d definitely go with the internal box. But I’m really wanting to start doing those NALRSA shoots so I might end up with the DBM. I’ve got this....wait for it because you’re going to hate me.....custom Creedmoor that I got finished last summer that is my first AI style magazine rifle. I had side cups installed instead of traditional studs and it’s SUPER comfortable to carry with a sling. Also, with a suppressor attached, the balance point is forward of the magazine so carrying it in my hand I don’t even know the mag is there. This was a totally unexpected outcome that was really lucky. So far, I’m really digging the DBM but it’s too new for me to be 100% sold on it yet.
Now, I COULD use this rifle as my competition gun and build this new one strictly for a hunting gun. I’ll have to check with Clayton about the possibility of converting this one over to a Switchlug. I wish Mike Bryant, who built it for me, had been more interested in installing the Switchlug; but it was too new skool for him, LOL. If I’d have to ditch this barrel I’m not going to do it until it’s ready for a rebarrel.
