Looks like a Marlin 336 made for Sears, re-branded and sold under their JC Higgins name.....

Yep it is a Marlin 336 rebranded for Sears. More than likely built in the 60's. Looks to be in really good shape should bring $400?

One of the poor man's 3030 of it's day is my understanding. Shoot well but cheaper guns to purchase
          Similar to a glenfield etc
I've had one and it was a great fun and yours is very clean

Nice ride. Mechanically, there was no difference between the JC Higgins and a regular Marlin. A less expensive wood may have been used in the stock, though. Could have been birch instead of Walnut, or something else. And there will be no bullseye at the bottom of the stock.

I have that rifle's sister in .35 Rem. If you decide to sell that gun, I would like to have it. Just send me a PM.

She's a beauty! The J.C. Higgins brand was used by Sears until the early sixties. Some sources say 1962 and others say as late as 1964. The serial number can be referenced just like a standard Marlin 336, using the date prefix letter. I have a Y stamped Sears and Roebuck Model 45, which puts it at 1964, after J.C. Higgins and before Ted Williams (Winchester) branded 30-30 rifles. Found it in a local pawnshop last year and paid $130 for it, including an old scope.

That time frame produced some neat rifles with unique stories and trails on how they came to be. Sure enough good gun. Would be neat for 35Remington to get it, that would be the only person I know to have a set.

Ditto on Marlin 336. Should be a great shooting gun especially when paired with the Hornady leverlution ammo. I have several Marlins and Winchesters, all do very well with that ammo. I have my son an early 60's 336 and its a tack driver at 200 yds. In all fairness, he is a great shot to begin with.
Are you selling it? If I had the choice, I would hang on to it.

Good for you. That’s definitely what I would do if I were in your shoes.

I don’t have a bullseye pic but search marlin bullseye on google and you’ll see lots.

neat guns for sure, and I agree on keeping Family guns in the Family. If it were me I would at least get it out to do what it was intended to do go shoot a deer with it. Make more memories.

There was a Glenfield brand 30-30..which was also re-branded Marlin 336..as far as I know all parts and scope bases are all interchangeable
