I don't care for the SSTs' terminal performance in CM if you want meat (although I'd try it in grendel); the ELD-X are great; my RAP happens to really like 120gn TTSXes, as in one-ragged-hole.

I'm still dialing in the load for ELD-Xs: 42gn H4350 2.8000 OAL and I'm getting about 1MOA. Going to try 1/100 more OAL and separately 0.5gn more powder and see if I can tighten it up.

(YMMV / always use manufacturer's reloading guidelines / do not try this at home)

Here is the ELD-X out of my Browning hells canyon 5 shots of course. I think I can do better with reloads but not bad for a 10x scope out of a hunting gun.

I shoot the Hornady 143 grain eldx, very accurate, but I've never killed anything with it. I got a couple of buddies who swear by the 120 grain A-max. He kills more deer with that bullet than anyone I know personally. If you shoot deer in the neck that A-max is the best bullet because it breaks apart so easily.

It all depends on what your barrel likes.

Is the only difference the ring that supposedly helps it mushroom better or is the jacket thicker on the X?

I am not 100% sure. The differences in the diagram may or may not be to scale. Thickness of the jacket, the ring in the ELD- X, and the size of the heat shield tip and how deep it sets in the bullet itself is what I see may possibly be different. I think about the regular soft point hunting bullets of today and yester year and that ELD-M and I don't see how the ELD-M isn't sufficient. You are still getting expansion and a dump of energy to create a wound cavity and the devastation shock through the body especially if the ammo/bullet and rifle combo are accurate enough to allow you to put it right where you want it. It is still a ballistic tip style bullet.

We've been feeding either the Hornady or Prime match grade stuff through the rifles until we find the ones each barrel likes. Hornady seems to be well liked by almost all but when a barrel likes the Prime stuff, it REALLY likes it. Experiment a little with a couple of weights and brands, its fun when you find THE one for your gun.
