Thread factory barrel or just wait and buy new?

Suppressor should be home soon. Bought it for my 300br primarily but would love to use it on my vanguard 6.5creedmoor. Should I get the factory barrel threaded or just wait and eventually get a better barrel that is already threaded?

I just threaded my factory barrels, but they are all bull barrels that have plenty of meat for threading as well as taking the can weight.

      Kind of depends I guess.
What length is the barrel currently?
      What profile is the barrel?
How Happy are you with how it currently shoots?

I had a rem 308 and a savage 6.5 cut down to 16.5 and threaded, both shoot very well afterwards suppressed.

I can only answer as if it were me. I would decide what I wanted the rifle's purpose was. Then I would do the math on how many fps I was giving up for each inch of barrel chop. Then I would have the barrel chopped down to the shortest possible length that still accomplished my objectives.

A bolt gun with a 24" barrel and a 9.5" can on the end is freakin long.

I would NOT thread that #2. There's not enough meat to thread it, imo. You would have to thread it 1/2x28 because a #2 isn't thick enough for 5/8x24 - you wouldn't have any shoulder. I had to go to a Bartlein 3B to barely get enough shoulder at 22" finished length. Then, you'd have to get an adapter to go up to 5/8x24, which is probably what your can is threaded for, or for the QD/brake mount to go onto. I don't like the idea of removing that much integrity to the most important end of a barrel. You can do it, sure. I just wouldn't. Especially if it shoots really well!

                  That's what I was thinking

I guess I'll just use it with my SBR and end up buying another can in the future when the barrel is done on my weatherby

Which suppressor did you go with? If it's a qd can, you can sometimes find a 1/2x28 mount that will still allow you to mount the 30 cal suppressor.

If it were me I wouldn't thread it.
I personally don't sell guns because I just dont. I'd put it in the safe for use as a backup/loaner/spare/lightweight rifle or to use in states that dont allow suppressor hunting.

If you do sell your guns and aren't sentimentally attached to the Weatherby I'd sell it and get something with a heavier profile in 6.5 TONS of great options out there for any budget from factory to custom.

                        Just my .02 though YMMV

I try not to sell anything. I have a Glock 19 that I’m gonna get rid of stricktly because it’s brand new in the box and I’ve just never had the desire to go shoot it since I bought it.

It shoots great and was a heck of a deal so I do like the idea of keeping as a backup/loaner rifle

If it's a bolt action you're wanting to run a suppressor on I would say have it threaded and have a thread protector made for it if you ever take the can or choice of attachment off of the barrel. Have the finish matched as closely as you can to that of the barrel.

Thread it if the barrel allows (enough meat) if not than buy a new gun.
