I killed this doe last weekend on doe patrol.
Used 223 and Federal Fusion 62 grain.

Shot her at 45 yards and the bullet hit top of the heart, destroyed the lungs and broke opposite leg.
Found the bullet as it almost exited the skin. Looked like a bomb went off when I hit her. She jumped straight up in the air.

          Recovered bullet....

I hear this often and find it a bit odd...You seem cautious about using it on a deer but it's a great round for hog...wth, hogs are thicker skinned, heavier boned and often greatly outweigh our average deer.

To the op, yes it will do the job with a good bullet, modest range and good shot placement.

I shot one two weeks ago with a little hotter round, an 80 grain from a 22-250AI. I always go for a high shoulder shot and dropped this one at 210 yards with the bullet shattering the shoulder blade on the outbound side.

Folks I hunt with in south Texas have gone up in caliber...3006,2506,270,300 to gain pass thru and blood trails, not eliminate them.
This. I've shot does with .204 rugers and .223, the latter loaded with 60grn Partitions. Recovered all of them, but blood trails sucked, and the .204 didn't exit. Use a good bullet and put it where it needs to go and you'll be fine; but I wouldn't expect the same results as a 30-30.

Bump this back up. I'm actually looking for a heavier SP to use in the 223. Also has anyone shot a deer with the red box 22 hornet ammo. Hornady has them for29.99 for 50.

If it will put down a pig, it will put down a deer. Of course, shot placement is crucial.

Are you talking about .223 ammunition or .22 Hornet ammunition? I've killed plenty of stuff with a .223. I've used the 50 gr. Nosler BT handload out of my CZ to kill a mouflon at 100 yds. DRT. I've found the Hornady Steel Case 55 gr hollow point is very accurate in this gun as well. Looking forward to using it on critters.

I've killed a butt load of axis and several pigs with my AR and the 64 gr. Winchester Ranger Power Point. I've had very good terminal performance with that bullet.

I have since moved to the 75 gr. Speer Gold Dot ammunition, but have not been able to use it on any critters just yet.

That’s all I use on our ranch is .223 and have killed more deer with it then all my other rifles combined. 55gr sierra SP boat tails puts them down no problem, but placement is key.

I neck shoot but no issues with a 223

If the rifle twist is 1-8 or 1-7 shoot the heavier stuff, 65+ grain.

I really like Hornady black 75 grainers... Have killed big pigs with it deer got nothing on a pig

I have taken several deer with my Mini 14 using Remington Core-Lokt 55 gr PSP ammo. Killed hogs and turkeys too. One of my favorite guns to shoot.
