I am right there with you. Debated the wood stock and cutting in for my Encore. I ended up buying a kit for the TC encore that has the adjustable M4 stock like and ar-15.

Mossberg makes the Patriot Bantam, which comes with a short stock and inserts to make the length of pull longer, if you want. That way, you don't have to cut it and it'll still fit your son when he's older.

Maybe a youth Remington 700. When he out grows that you could swap out the stock with a full size aftermarket for less then most new rifles and have good light weight full size rifle.
