    Help with rifle build

I have a Savage 308 that I don’t use and it’s a great gun but have other new ones that I like better. I am thinking about doing a build on the savage action. I have never done a build before and don’t know where to start. I am think something in a mid caliber but yet long range for deer hunting or a blind gun. What would be y’all suggestions and who to do the work for me

    Thanks Wil

Since you have the action already now pick the caliber. That selection might be easier if you don't reload since then you would be looking at cartridges with very good factory ammo. If you reload or don't mind going with custom loads for the gun then the selection is wide open.

Next choose the barrel maker and to an extent contour you want then stock to match.

You can have a good smith turn a straight taper barrel to any contour you want, which is what I did with my last build (which was built for a light weight soft recoiling rifle with good accuracy it is in the picture with a hog and ugly old man.).

Cut rifle barrels are my preference but have some button rifled barrels that shoot very well.

Chose you stock and assemble the pieces you want.

With a Savage you can put it together or have a smith do the work. Barrels are available in many calibers for your chosen action.

As far as calibers I have tried quite a few and if building a medium one these days it would be a 7mm-08AI. the AI is not really for the little extra speed from a slightly larger case but less case prep for reloading as the AI geometry requires much less trimming than some other designs. Shooting 162gr bullets it is a hammer to my 500 yard self imposed shot on game limit.

If you have any mechanical knowledge I would suggest doing it yourself. Savages are super simple to swap barrels. Just need a few tools, action wrench, barrel nut wrench and head space gauges.
Northland Shooter Supply has a good supply of parts and easy to deal with.
What's the max range you plan on shooting?

        I’d say 500-600 yards

This. E.A. Brown & Co. also has a lot of Savage stuff.

My caliber choices would be 7mm-08 or 6.5x47 Lapua.

Do you reload? Or just factory ammo?

I do reload so that’s not a problem.
