    What 6.5 should I build?

I have an unturned Bartlein 1-8 6.5mm barrel and a 700 short action. Don't really want to do a 260 or a Creedmore but also don't want to spend a fortune on brass.

    6.5 WSM, 6.5 SAUM, 6.5 GAP??

Supposedly next runs of gap4s brass will only be around $1/piece

might be able to do the 6.5x55. great round or 6.5x47. any reason you want to do the short mags? 6.5 cal is all about efficiency and the 6.5x55 has been killing Caribou for a long time in Europe

I would like to get it going as fast as I can in that length action. I wouldn't have particularly chosen the 6.5 barrel but I got it for next to nothing.

I'm holding out to see what the new Hornady 6.5 PRC is all about.

            It's my go to gun.

Shoot, you need a long action. Sorry.

I personally would go more accuracy wise. 6.5 doesn't need to go that fast and barrel life will be next to nothing in those cals.

You should sell me the action and buy a LA for a 26 Nosler lol

Or this one. 50-75fps slower than saum with factory ammo option. Brass is already available

What bolt face dies your action have? I went with 6.5WSM and with Alpha mags I can run my bullets out to 2.950". With 65.5gr of Retumbo, I'm pushing a 140gr VLD to 3230fps. 6mils of drop to 1000 yards, 1mil to 400. It's a hammer, but..... the 270WSM parent brass is hard to find and expensive. I also had to turn case necks, but that is more of a reamer thing, could have spec'd a larger neck.

I'm looking at the 6.5 Addiction next. It's essentially a 6.5x55 AI, with a few tweeks. Designed to run in a short action, Lapua brass is available for the Swede and cheap compared to their other stuff. Load it up, fire form it tho the Addiction and you are done, should get you up around 3000-3100fps according to what I've read.

I would choose a 6.5 saum or the 6.5 PRC. If you don't reload, go with a PRC. If you do reload, the 135JLK's behind 62gr H1000 in the 6.5 SAUM (same as 6.5 Gap 4s) is hard to beat and will have great barrel life. My 6.5SAUM is easily my favorite rifle.

What bolt face is your action? Assuming it is .473", it will have to be opened up to Magnum.

I like the 6.5 Addiction but it has to have a 0.010" free bore to run in a short action. Most long 140's wouldn't be ideal shoved that far I the case.

Honestly, I don't really subscribe to the "ideal", nothing below the neck shoulder junction, losing powder capacity, buffeting the bullet arguments. I agree they all have some merit, but my WSM has bullets seated below the NSJ slightly, and still performs incredibly. Maybe not for a bench rest gun, but for my uses, 1/4moa at 3200fps+ is more than adequate. To me, it's all about performance, and even though I do like to "nerd out" on the tiny, theoretical stuff..... in the end, an accurate rifle spitting bullets out at high velocity is my goal, and getting too far off into the weeds of all that other stuff gets in the way for me. If you're looking for efficient, well designed, you need to stick with something originally designed to be a sort action 6.5mm like the 6.5x47L, 6.5 Creedmore, 6.5prc etc. If you're looking for more performance than those offer, you might have to give up some of the other "rules". I never understood why people got upset about losing a few tenths of a grain of powder capacity because the bullet extends down into the case body a little bit, when they chose that case because it increased the capacity by 10+ grains over the standard configuration, and has other benefits like no case growth, quality brass available, etc
