I have a Marlin 1895 in 45-70 that I put a Skinner sight on. Then I loaded up some 405 grain cast lead bullets for it to shoot pigs with. When I went to sight in, I ran out of adjustment on the sight and was still shooting low at 50 yds. Like 4 " low. I've been advised to use thin metal to shim up my sight. I've done this with scopes before, so it makes sense to me. My question is, how much thickness to shim it. I have some aluminum flashing that I can easily make shims from, but the recoil on this thing is brutal, so I would like to get it right with as little trial and error as possible. I haven't measured the thickness of my flashing, but I know it's thicker than a soda can. Will I have the same amount of change as I would with a scope? Or will it be less since it's not a magnified sight? All advice is appreciated.
