    Backup handgun thoughts

Looking for some advice about what to do for a fallback sidearm. My buddy operates a hog operation and we always go in there with rifles but I've been carrying a .40 Glock on my hip with hard cast ammo as backup. I've used .45 in the past on a ****** off hog when I got caught with my rifle too far from me. It went down but I felt like I was fortunate with that outcome and lesson learned.

My question is should I invest in something a little bit more potent than what I'm currently carrying like a 10MM or 460 Rowland? I'm not too interested in carrying a big hunk of metal like a 44 or 41 sagging on my hip all day in the heat. Anyone have any experience with how effective something like a 40 is if you do your part on a hog or should I just bite the bullet and go bigger?

I've killed dozens with a 40, loaded with hardball.

If you're wanting something more potent, the 10mm is just the ticket. It's a bad mamma jamma.

Thanks. Yeah that's pretty much what I was thinking. I think I'm trying to justify a new gun.

I wouldn't feel under gunned using a .40 and the 200gr hard cast. If your just wanting something with more oomf any of the ones you mentioned would work. My current small powerhouse is a 5 shot .41 with a ported 4" barrel. It's no harder to carry than a semiauto and packs a lot more punch. A 5 shot .44 magnum is also available from S&W and Taurus.

I have the Taurus Tracker in .44 cal. Smaller frame revolver and is a 5 shot. Relatively inexpensive. Recoil less than you would think from a lightweight .44 Mag. I got it for personal protection in grizzly country. It will do a number on a hog in .44 special and they make a snake shot round that will trash a rattlesnake.

This is America, no justification needed. It's called freedom!

At various times, a G20, aG40, a Taurus Titanium Tracker in .41 mag, or a Ruger Bisley in .45 Colt have served me as a belt gun, but I'm always carrying my Shield in .40 S&W. I wouldn't call it a stopper though unless you hit the brain or some serious bone.

Load that .40 or .45 with some buffalo bore ammo.
