    22 Nosler barrel length

I've got an itch to rebarrel a LaRue Stealth upper I have into a 22 Nosler. I'm waffling back and forth between 18" and 20" (White Oak Armament) barrel and thought I'd get some input from others. I've been on a SBR kick the last few years and I generally prefer a shorter and lighter barrel; but the Nosler is so much about velocity that I'm willing to 'go long' (somewhat) on this one. Besides, the barrel it's replacing is 18" anyway.

I'm NOT willing to go all the way to 24". Especially since this will be shot mostly suppressed. Data is hard to find and Nosler wasn't much help - they ducked and dodged when I tried to get answers about the numbers they provide and the average loss/gain per inch of barrel length. I ended up hanging up on them because they were so useless and frustrating. Lol! I'm guessing that there's about 40fps per inch loss/gain. Nosler isn't saying. Lol! Then, they say it was developed for gas guns and that you get ***xfps from a 18"bbl but you look at their load data (https://load-data.nosler.com/load-data/22-nosler/) and their test rifle is a 24" bolt rifle! Lol!

Given all this, would you go with a 18" barrel or a 20" barrel on a gas gun in 22 Nosler? I'm not sure what bullets im going to load. Im probably going to start with some factory ammo and then experiment with everything between 55gr and 77gr

I'd go 18" with a rifle length gas system.

I'm no expert, but did a quick run in QuickLoad. Remember, this is just a MODEL!

      Using Hornady 55gr Vmax

      18" 3332 fps 96.7% burn
      20" 3421 fps 97.5% burn

What I've seen from other calibers is more like 25fps/ inch

Thanks for the quickload info!! I've GOT to get that program. Been holding off because I'll have to buy a PC just to run it. Lol! That verifies what I was extrapolating from the limited and confusing data I could find. I'm gonna go for the 20"! Heck, I can always whack it down to 18" later. I wish I could handle a 24"bbl just to see the velocities but that's just too long, heavy and unwieldy for me. Lol.

        Thanks stxhunter!!
