Let's talk Rem 700 long range stock rifle

been told I need a big boy gun so considering a rem700 long range in 7 mag or 300 win not sure yet. I feel like it's a good price point gun for the start of a semi custom. Will prolly cut down barrel, bed the stock, and add a trigger. Would like to hear your all experiece with this particular rifle. They're showing for 625 free shipping on buds

I've got one in 300wm. It's a heavy rifle. I put a NF 20 moa base, rings, and a NF NXS 8-32x56 on top. It shoots great with cor-lokts. I'm about to start loading for it. Easy 1 moa, i also put a Timney trigger in it Nd plan to bed the stock. I really like it for the price. I got mine out the door for 675 (rifle only), that was about a year or so ago.

If your just looking for,a stock long range rifle and a good starting point just get a Sendero. All you'll need to do is put a trigger job and muzzle break on. Is this for a junt? If it is and stalking is a probability then might not want to go that route.

Why would you want to cut down the barrel? Just curious. For most magnums you need that extra length to maximize an efficient powder burn.

This would be just so I have a magnum cartridge in the stalls. I'd cut it down to shave weight prolly go from 26-22" than add the break. This is not being purchased as a "long range" rifle. It's the the title of the 700 series I'm interested in only. This would be a hunting rifle. But aren't they all lol

If you are going to a 22" bbl you need to stay away from magnums. They need the extra barrel length to adequately burn the powder. At 22" I would not go bigger than a 30.06. Even the 30.06 really needs 24"

You are really handcuffing yourself in long rage shooting by chopping the barrel. If you are really looking at long range I would stay 26 inches and go up to the .300 RUM.

              Indeed...if you want 22", then think 30-06 based cases like 270 & 280.

All you are going to do is make the gun crazy loud & have a bunch of unused powder along with unnecessary recoil.

X2. No custom work necessary outside of a $150 trigger upgrade. And definitely don't cut the barrel for a magnum round.

Then I'll go 26" with a proof lol. Not really looking into a sendero. I didn't know the magnums needed long barrel for powder burn

300 magnums that aren't grossly overbore don't need 26" barrels to burn all of the powder like smaller bore magnums do. You will lose a little velocity but not much.

What kind of shooting ARE you planning to do? I read (which others seemed to miss, lol) in your OP that you're NOT interested in LR shooting? Lots of replies referring to "long range shooting" despite what you said.

I will 'second' what others have written about magnums needing longer barrels for complete powder burn and suggest that there may be some other calibers better suited for what you're wanting to do. Here's a thread from another site that addresses the question of a 20" 300wm. Part way down you'll find some quickload data that you may find interesting, and confirms what Artos and others posted.

If you are going Remmy ( a lot of other comparable or better options out there) get the model 5R in 300. It has everything you need in a quality long range rifle at a great price.

So, if you dont mind me asking, are you looking for something that has a lot of felt recoil? Because if you like the ballistics of the 300 WM, then the 6.5 creedmoor has very similar performance and ballistics.
I understand that people like what they like for different reasons. But if your going to call anything a Big Boy, I would say look at the 338LM and up.

Good articles, I have read the 300WM one previously and honestly I crenge when I think of taking a saw and chopping off sections of the barrel like that... That was a beautiful rifle!
