My son (13) has really taken a liking to pistol shooting lately. He's wanted a centerfire revolver after watching Jerry Miculek
, and we traded a member here for a S&W 686 a while back. He's put plenty of .38 Specials through it, along with a handful of .357 Magnums each shooting session. But I can tell the Magnums were a bit much for him. After the first few, you could see him tensing up and anticipating the recoil.
A good friend recommended we try shooting gloves. But he also recommended that instead of buying actual shooting gloves, that we look at fingerless weight lifting or cycling gloves so we could get them locally.
We found an inexpensive (less than $20) pair of leather padded weightlifting gloves at Academy. Nice thing about buying locally, is he was able to try many sizes and styles. He went with a lightweight leather padded palm version.
Today was his first day using them. He never once flinched or looked like he was anticipating recoil. He put a little less than half a box through it - 4 speed loaders of 6 each. He looked very comfortable, and he grouped well.
I think we found his confidence builder. The gloves allowed him to relax and they helped absorb some recoil so he was able to shoot longer and more accurately.
Pretty good day at the ranch.
All the best,
Glenn
