    build or buy 6.5. creedmoor?

"Competition" is a very broad term. If you can afford to, I'd recommend building a custom that's designed FOR you and for the type of competition you plan on shooting. And I'd do a lot of research on what you'll need before you start building. You can build a darn nice custom rifle for around $2k-$2500 that will be perfectly suited for the competitive shooting you plan to do.

I've got a terrific shooting Savage in 6.5cm and a Tikka CTR in .260; both of which would probably work. They each have shortcomings (not in accuracy) that drove me, in part, to build a custom 6.5 Creedmoor for the specific intent of getting into a little competitive shooting. I don't buy the "blueprinted at the factory" sales pitch. Production rifles are production rifles, even with some extra QC. I got lucky and got a Savage off the rack that shoots consistent .3 moa groups with its 140gr pet load. I could just as easily bought the one next to it and ended up with a .9 or 1 moa rifle. It's the luck of the draw no matter what production rifle you get. While their components may be 'good' they're just not the same as what you'll put in a custom rifle. In competition it's the little things that make the difference.

This is not to say it's not possible to shoot a factory gun in competition - it is. We all shoot what we can afford and the main thing is to get out there and shoot. I'm just saying, given the option I'd go custom.

Even though my Savage shoots better, if I was going to start with a factory rifle I'd go with the Tikka T3x CTR with a 24" barrel. I like the action better and would feel better about customizing it down the road. If you've got the coin, build a full custom rifle. Take a look at West Texas Ordinance and their SwitchLug system - build one rifle that can be changed into any number of calibers/configurations with nothing more than a Wheeler Fat Wrench! My next custom will use it whether I have them build it or someone else!

One other route is to look for a good used custom rifle in the classifieds here or, especially, over on Snipers Hide. Lots of great 6.5 creedmoors come up on a regular basis....at great values!

    Good luck!
