Turkey Hunting with a Full Choke?

Are the X-Full or XX-Full chokes really worth it?

I have a turkey hunt planned this weekend and I have my Browning A5 with the factory Invector DS Full Choke. I also have a Benelli Nova that I have a Full choke for as well (have to check). Per Browning the Invector DS Full throws about 75-85% pattern density, 30" circle at 30 yrds. I don't know about the Benelli factory tube. I haven't had a chance to pattern either of these yet as I just bought the shells yesterday. Will be shooting Winchester Supreme XX 3" 1300 FPS #5s.

I shoot a full and it is plenty tight group out to 40 yards

I hunt with the full choke that came with my Browning. Before I got that gun, I killed all my turkeys with 2 3/4" shells and a modified choke. I wouldn't spend any extra money on "speciality" turkey chokes. Just my opinion.

No need to buy a turkey choke. The factory full choke is more than adequate.

I once bought a super-tight turkey choke thinking it would be great to drop one at 50-60 yards. However I quit using it when I realized that of all the turkeys I have shot over the decades, none have been beyond 30 yards or so and most have been much closer.

Get out there and pattern your chokes. Really only way to tell what your gun is capable of doing. And what will work best. Other wise, your leaving a lot to chance.

That I know, as stated in my OP, I just bought the shells yesterday and have not had a chance to pattern them yet. Won't be able to until I'm at camp on Friday. Was just looking for thoughts on if the Full chokes in general are adequate enough.

                Thanks!

I have killed most of mine with factory full and even a few with mod (forgot to change Uber's before I left). All 40 yards and in.

I've never used a "turkey" choke. I've killed them with 2 3/4" shells and a modified choke. I've killed them with a .22. I've killed them with my bow. And I've killed them with my deer rifle. I haven't used a rock yet, but that would probably work too, in the right situation.

No need to buy another choke tube though.

I've had more shots at turkeys where I was worried that they were too close than where I felt I needed 10 more yards.

The choke you really doesn't matter but it must match your mximum distances you plan to shoot. You need good shot density for good clean kills. Yet if you hold your shot to 10-15 yards a skeet choke can work. Shooting extremely tight chokes can also cause difficulty if shots are to close as pin point accuracy is needed. As already stated. go pattern your gun with whatever choke yo desire and hold your shots to that distance where you are getting 20-30 pellets in the head /neck. You can also get by with smaller shot is distances are shorter. You will need larger shot if you plan on long 40-50 yard shots.

I shoot Hevi shot Magnum blend and use an HS Undertaker High Density .675 choke. Shoots real tight on out there which is what I want. I have several aftermarket chokes and some do better than others.

                            If you can...

pattern the gun with your full choke. Like others said it should be plenty. I loaded my old Remington 3200's both barrels up full and full and shot an 1-1/2 of copper plated 5's and had no trouble killing 'em.

My son killed two turkeys at 40 and 42 yards with the factory full choke in a youth 870 twenty gauge, 3" #6 shot. I wouldn't be scared of the factory full on a 12 gauge.
