Well, I built myself a new shooting bench today. Been thinking and planning this for a while now. I wanted a bench that would be ambidextrous, allow the shooter to get square to the rifle (for good recoil management) and provide enough room to keep all your gear accessible. The hitch was- this particular range is in my front yard. So, I needed something that wouldn't be an eyesore, to my wife and her friends. She's the best wife a guy could imagine: letting me have a range in the front yard, reloading bench in the living room and generally putting up with my life-long obsession with hunting and shooting. Heck, she's even become my hunting partner!
My way of saying "Thank you, babe!" was to design a bench that masquerades as a outdoor dining table. The bench has a cut-out that allows the shooter to 'get into' the bench, with plenty of elbow room but I made an insert that changes it into a regular style dining table. It may not be concrete but it's VERY stout and almost as rigid a concrete table - there's ZERO wiggle.
Total cost to build it was under $150. 100% treated lumber and the legs are 6x6 posts. It's 4'x5' and 31.5" tall. I may add picnic bench seats to the 2 long sides but my wife is still undecided whether she wants picnic seating or for me to build some chairs. I'm going to add a popup canopy, for shade, before the summer heat sets in.

Here's the bench with the insert in place, to remove the inset for the shooter and make it a fully functional dining table:

Here's a shot of the underside of the bench as I was building it:

Hope it passes muster with the GS!
