    7mm/08 load recommendations...

    Okay,

I'm about through sanding down the barrel channel of my 700 CDL so that the barrel free floats. Now I'm ready to load some ammo and get to the range. I have on hand:

    Bullets
    Speer 145 gr. BT
    Hornady 139 gr. BTSP
    Hornady 139 gr. SST
    Sierra 140 gr. BTSP
Barnes 140 gr. TTSX and X bullet

    Powder
    IMR 4350
    IMR 4064
    Varget
    IMR 4895
    IMR 4831
    IMR 3031

Any suggestions on where to start and what bullet? The rifle liked the old Hornady Light Magnum 139 gr. BTSP, but they don't make it any more.

I'd start with 40gr of Varget pushing the 139gr SST if you are looking for a deer killer. My pet load is 42.5gr of RL-15 behind a 140gr Nosler Ballistic Tip. It's deer killing machine.

My little boy shoots the 120gr Ballistic Tip with 40gr of RL-15. No recoil and works great for him. Not quite as accurate as the hotter load but plenty for him.

Yeah, kinda what I was thinking as well. I'll start at 40 grains for all bullets. The gun hasn't like any previous loads with the SST, but I didn't keep the data on it. I only keep the accurate ones.

Varget and the 120 gr & 140 gr TTSX have worked really well for me out of my vanguard 2.

I quit reloading for my 7mm-08 when I ran across these two rounds. For hunting, the Barnes VOR-TX 120 grain triple shock bullet. It's a devastating round- deer, pigs, black bear varmints. I never was able to develop a better hunting round when I reloaded.

I need to load up that 140 grain Barnes bullet and see what I can do.

For general shooting, the occasional competition and hunting, I really like the Hornady Superformance GMX Ammunition 7mm-08 Remington 139 Grain. Again, just haven't been able to beat out this round for performance, especially when I was shooting quite a bit competitively.

Sell those bullets and buy some Nosler 120 grain ballistic tips. Add 45.0 grains or Varget with a Federal 210 primer. Then go shoot itty bitty groups.

Same recipe but 44.5 grains Varget.

I quit the TTSX when I started loading Nosler BT's. just as accurate or better and much better performance on deer and hogs.

I have only tried 120gr ballistic tips in a rifle I built for my wife. The first rounds down the rifle showed that it liked them with Varget and I never needed to find another load. This is just for Texas deer and hogs.
