Model 70 vs. Model 70 Featherweight?

What's the difference between the two. Is it the stock, barrel, or what? I have a model 70 featherweight in .257 Roberts that I'm considering restocking with a Bell and Carlson Ultralight Medalist stock. Midway just has it listed as Model 70 Post '64 Short Action with aluminum bedding block. Will it fit my featherweight?

I thought the stock was the difference. In for the answer!!

My Model 70 .257 Bob Featherweight requires a long action stock. The only difference in the short vs. long action is the bolt stop and a magazine spacer.

Pay attention to your barrel contour though... I don't remember if the featherweight uses a sporter contour or something else. I used a custom inlet since I took out the factory barrel and put in a Pac-Nor barrel. If you call B&C, they can tell you the contour for the featherweight.

            I thought mine...

was a short action. I guess I'll have to measure and check. The magazine has a spacer in the front so that's why I thought it was short action. I thought the stock was the difference between model 70 and 70 featherweight.

For the XTR's, it's called a "short action" but there's no difference in the action. More specifically, the receiver mounting screws are the same distance apart and the action is the exact same shape. All Winchester, in their infinite wisdom, did was install a bolt stop that doesn't let the bolt go all the way back and put in a spacer in the magazine.

              When I rebuilt my mid-80s .257 Model 70 Featherweight, I used a Manners MCS-T long action stock.

I think it wasn't until sometime much later that Winchester came out with a true "short action" that was actually a shorter receiver.
