fellas .. can't we all get along ? granted you can get cheap 223 ammo ... the point i was trying to make is you can use 17hmr on most 22 cans... and it's quieter than any 223.

if you have thousands of acres at your disposition and can make all the noise you want .. then 223 would be just fine .. but on a small place like mine .. being able to dispatch critter without making too much noise is kinda nice ... and 17 hmr seems to be a great cartridge for that ...

i shoot the ruag 62's on my 223 and it's still .40 a round delivered... and most of the time , after the first shot , that area is done for the night ... so to each is own .. but i'm glad i have both ...

on another note , from a rimfire standpoint .. the 17hmr seems to be easier to shoot accurately to 200 yards better than anything else .. including 22 mag or 22lr ...

well ... to my surprise a couple of hogs showed on on my far feeder (150 yards)... i spotted them first with the thermal on the 22... but i was sure , there is no way to lobe a 40 grain subsonic that far for a kill shot ...

so i grabbed the 17 hmr .. i have a green spotlight on it , but that would not reach ... so the feeder has a motion activated light, it's on low all the time and turns brighter with motion .. it was like $7 on ebay ... sure enough teh 2 hogs end up under the feeder , so i braced myself , and aimed at the ground so i could see my crosshairs , then i waited until one of the hogs stepped behind the feeder and sideways so i could see enough of the light to somewhat see my crosshairs .. (when they are in front , they outline great , but you can't see your crosshairs ... i need a lit reticle for that )... he moved to the right spot and i sent the 17 grain ballistic tip on it's way around 2650fps ... next thing i know I hear a sound like a phone book slammed on the table and he flips over .. all legs up and kicking !!! WHAT ???? so i reload and wait until i see his head and sent one more .... first hit was the yellow pages , second was the white pages ... all in all 110 foot pound of energy left around 1705 f/s .. is what the 17 grain bullet had left ... but it did the job .... yes i could have definitely used something bigger , but how many rifles can you carry to the blind all at once ... had to do with what i had .. but it did the job !! way to go 17 hmr!
This is bad@ss. Great work. Time to get a thermal for the .17

I'm glad you like it. There are definitely reasons why there are different cartridges around. I think it would outperform any other rimfire out there.

17 WSM is the top performer. 20 GR V-Vmax at 3000fps.

because it was already on my other gun .. os i'd have to un-scope both of them

swap out the optic , go through the menu to select the saved position ...

didn't want to chance it , or make the noise .. so i looked through the scope , saw i could make the shot and took it

17 wsm is not a rimfire ... so then .204 ruger blows it away (32 grain at 4225 F/s) and many others too 220 swift .. and a bunch of wildcats ... not a fair comparison IMHO.

but as far as rimfire .. current available cartridges ... 17 hmr is up there as a top performer....

That's more expensive and less powerful than a .223.

Could say the same about HMR prices.

Uh no sir. 17 WSM is a Rimfire not a center fire.
It's the fastest Rimfire made. Look it up for yourself. 17 HMR is number 2. Not the top anymore. It got knocked off the Number 1 spot a couple years back now.
.17 Winchester Super Magnum, is a rimfire rifle cartridge developed by the ammunition ... Currently, rifles firing the 17 WSM are the Savage B-Mag bolt action, heavy barrel B-mag Target edition. Ruger Model 77/

You need to open you up a lemon aid stand.

Ragin was right .. the 17 wsm is a rimfire ... i stand corrected !

but i'm gonna stick to the hmr .. easy to find ammo , accurate , savage rifles are great with accutrigger and cheap .. got mine factory threaded , fluted and with a scope for $299 and a rebate to boot .. i think another 30 or 40 bucks ...

can't beat that with a stick!
