You can build a moderately priced rifle using Palmetto State Armory, that will shoot with any high priced black rifle. No need to pay for a name.

With that said I would love to build one keeping it under $1200 or so. This would be one that I could eventually put a supresser on and shooting no father then 100 yards.

Is there a good reference source I could read about building one with as much of Tx made parts as you suggest. Any good sources on lowers etc that I can start with? Money is tight so this will take me a while to build, so what to start with first and so on.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
Shoot a piston AR suppressed before you buy a gas rifle. You will notice an improvement. Most will tell you to buy the cheapest parts available, I disagree. There is a reason most AR15 manufacturers never have had or will have LE or defense contracts. Just like with a deer lease, you get what you pay for.

Piston Vs Gas? Didn't even know there was a difference. Another thought. I was at GT Distributers in Austin and the guy showed me some AR's from $500 up to $1200 bucks and broke down the parts and price differences for me. He showed me the newer Springfield Saint which felt really nice in my hands and said for under $900 this is a great starter. Get familiar with what I like and don't like and then build one from there as I really don't have anything to go from knowledge wise. I've only put a couple mags down my friends and that's my experience. Any reviews from y'all about the Saint? Would this be a good route to go? Then go from there?

If your are building, I highly recommend the JP silent capture spring system. I love mine, especially shooting suppressed sub sonic rounds.

I just did something similar, my goal was to build a solid "mid-grade" AR for $1k sans optic. Good quality, reliable stuff with upgraded components without paying for bling and gimmicks.

Lower was built from a stripped Runner Runner Texas Flag with a PSA lower build kit. I got the upgraded Magpul CTR stock along with MOE grip and trigger guard, and their enhanced polished trigger.

Upper is a PSA premium 14.5" pinned/welded with mid-length gas system, FN cold hammer forged chrome lined barrel, and A2 fixed front site for durability.

Troy folding rear sight, Midwest Industries drop-in handguard, BCM Gunfighter charging handle, and Magpul QD sling bring it right to a grand.

For an extra $200 the Vortex SPAR or Sig Romeo red dots seem to be solid choices.

I'm still new to the AR game, only had mine for 2 months but I've made some upgrades. Mines an Aero precision. Suggestion I can make it to look into the 1x scopes pretty good. I originally was going to buy a red dot, but after doing some research I found the 1x scopes do pretty much the same as a red dot, but much more. I just put a vortex strike eagle 1x6 on my rifle and I love it, very glad I went with the scope over a red dot. Another thing is to buy a good trigger. I put a CMC flatty on mine and absolutely love it! It is definitely an awesome new addiction! Here's a pic of mine-

Too many options! That's why I still have a lower just sitting in a drawer, can't decide which way to go.

I build a mostly Texas gun: the lower I got from Liberty Gun Works, parts kit from DSG arms, trigger from CMC, upper from Radical Firearms

The bad thing about starting with them is I have a 5.56, a 300bo sbr and now am gonna build up the lower I have as either a 6.5 or 6.8

The Saint is a really good rifle for the money. Only reason you would "build" an AR (your really just assembling parts) is if you just like tinkering with them like I do. You will learn all about them this way but sometimes its overwhelming with all the different choices and options. If not I would not hesitate one bit on that Saint. Keep your eyes peeled for a deal. There's a place here in fort worth that had one for $799.

Man, I'm happy to help! You can build a solid shooter on a budget. Buy premium parts that are important and then save on other non crucial parts. I just built my brother an awesome Ar10 for about 750-800. My Ar10 was a little more but i chose more premium parts in some areas.

PM me your email and I'll send you a spreadsheet I created to track budget, drop in items and options and choose the ones your going with. I nerded out on that spreadsheet but it gives you a good overall view and lays out the part categories you'll need.

On YouTube watch the guy NZ85. He is a pleasure to watch and learn from on his upper and lower build vids.

Building is fun and a hell of a man hobby after work!

Here is my AR10 i just finished last week..

Haven't read all the replies yet but my last 4 lowers have been from Texas Black Rifle Company in Shiner. Texas made and even anodized in Texas! Great product and great people.
