    Practice & hunting ammo ? 357 Mag

I now have my base, rings and scope mounted on my Ruger Security Six 357 Mag with a 6" barrel and want to start getting ammo to get the scope sighted in, practice with it by plinking and then need ammo that I could hunt deer/hogs with during next season. I have been shooting 158 grain jacketed hollow points, but those are hand loads from many years ago and I no longer have the loading equipment. What do you suggest for ammo and the best place to buy from.

    Thanks

125 JHP is what I used to go with, 7 3/4" barrel.

Do you have pictures of the gun? My Grandmother gave me her Security Six but is the 4" model.

I usually go to Ammoseek.com to find ammo. Since I reload I do not have any specific recommendations. I have harvested a few deer with my .44 Mag Contender using Hornady Leverevolution ammo. Good luck with your search.

I attempted deer hunting with a 4 inch iron sighted .357 Mag about 15 years ago. At the time I chose 158 Federal Hydra Shocks. I reasearched the same issue and came to the conclusion that if I shot the small hill country does I was targeting in the rib cage behind the shoulder 125 grain hollow points would have been adequate. I was concerned that I might get a shot at a good buck and would want to aim for the front shoulder, or a big hog, so I chose the heavier bullet for increased penetration. I would select a good reliable expanding 158 grain hollow point and you should be in good shape.

I would try a hard cast 158 Semi wadcutter style.

Mine has the 4" barrel. No plans to hunt with it but really love the gun. Man I really hate it when the photos load upside down....lol

I shot a small whitetail deer last November with my S&W Model 686 with 6.0 inch long barrel and 2x Leupold scope. I hit it at 60 yards with a 158 gr. JHP bullet. I was aiming at the shoulder, but it dropped its head just as I touched the round off, and it hit approximately 1.0 inch below his spine. The bullet just blew his lungs apart. The landowner on our lease saw the damage and said: "the .357 Magnum is death". Truer words were never spoken. I think the 158 gr. JHP rounds would be fine. I carry the same load in my Marlin 1894 carbine (also chambered in .357 Magnum).

                  Good luck,

                  Dave
