I know this question comes up from time to time, and I know that some firearms simply like a powder better than another. But I thought it would be interesting to compile a list of “favorites”. On some of my rifles and pistols, I’m still not done testing. I have loads that I like, but I feel like there is more, so I’m not settled on anything just yet. Plus, what’s the fun of having a perfect load for everything? I like testing too much to be completely satisfied with every weapon!
But there are some I’ve locked down as “my favorite recipe”, and I don’t plan to change anytime soon. If you have such combos, I’d appreciate if you would share. I didn’t add the amount of powder, case or primer, as I didn’t want a new reloader to see this and jump straight to my load for their particular rifle. What works in mine may be too much for theirs. Remember new reloaders – start low and work up.
.308 Rifle – IMR 4064 with Sierra #2145 SBT (165 grain). Secondary was Varget with same bullet.
.308 Pistol – H4895 with Sierra #2120 SP (125 grain).
.270 – H4831 and H4831SC with most any 130 grain bullet. But I’ve been having good luck with Hornady 2730 SP (130 grain).
7mm-08 – IMR 4064 with Hornady 2830 SP (139 grain).
6.8 SPC – H335 with a Sierra 1810 SP (110 grain).
.300 AAC – I like two different combos. I like Lil’ Gun with a Sierra 2120 SP (125 grain), and I like W296 with a Nosler 30125 BT (125 grain)
.357 Max Rifle and Pistol – H110 / W296 with most any 180 grain bullet. Currently out of my favorite bullet (discontinued), and my second favorite bullet is being rationed because it was also discontinued last year. Hoping someone steps up to make a worthy 180 grain bullet soon, as I’m not liking what’s currently in production.
.30 Herrett – I’m not settled yet. I’ve tested 2400 and W296 with 125 grain bullets. I just bought some new bullets, and I’m going to start work-ups again.
7TCU – Same as the Herrett. I’m not completely settled. I’ve had good luck with H322 and 120 grain Nosler 28120’s, and H4895 with 120 grain Sierra 1900 BTSP.
All the best,
Glenn
