Seating depth gauges- what do you use?

Heretofore, I've always just measured OAL to the tip. I've never done any real precision rifle work though, and that needs to change. So I need to buy the tool.

I think it will end up being a moot point with this rifle anyway, I don't think I will be able to get anywhere near the lands and still fit in the magazine. 6.5 CM in a RAP.

Hornady makes a COAL gauge that comes with 5 or 6 different inserts to check from 22 to 30 cal. I have that one and it works very well. Just put it on a set up calipers and your ready to go. Sinclair (and a few others I believe) make a nut with holes that serves the same purpose. You will find that measuring to the ogive will keep you from chasing your tail since bullets tend to have minor length variations to the tip.

The Hornady tool is hard to beat and really helps.

A buddy has a RPR in 308 and loaded 168 SMK's out to the lands with no magazine issues. It made a huge difference as he was very disappointed the the rifles performance until I turned him on to this tip. He went from 2 inch groups to .3-.6 by varying them from .005-.050 off the lands.

That's one of the strong points of the CM, it's a tad shorter case length which gives you a bit more room in the mag.

Thanks for the referral! I have an extra comparator set I don't need.

You can use one of these too-

But to take some of the guess work and "sneaking up on it" work out of the job, you need one of these too, with the caliber-specific modified cartridge case:

Find your gunpowder measuring tools for accurate reloading at Brownells, including bullet comparators, calipers, and case length gauges. Save on gunpowder measuring tools from SINCLAIR INTERNATIONAL, HORNADY, and LYMAN for precise reloading.
