That No. 1 is a whole lot different than a lever gun when it comes to those heavy loads.

The #1 or what I have the #3 is about as strong an action as has ever been made.

but a lever gun loaded to 38,000 with heavy hardcast will shoot all way through one!! so would a heavy loaded heavy bullet 45 colt!! way more penetration than most folks realize!!

i love my no 1's, u can make a 7x57 really perform n one too!!

If you can load the rounds to 2000 fps or better and are using good bullets that won't fragment when they hit big bones there is no reason why you can't take a buffalo.
Last year I took a Cape buffalo with a .404 Jeffery. I was using ammo made by Superior custom ammunition with 400 gr Barnes TSX bullets. They consistently clocked at just over 2300 fps. The round went through a rib, through the buffalo's heart and stopped between the ribs on the far side. The exit wound in the heart was big enough to put both fists in but the buffalo still ran about 40 yards before he dropped. They are incredibly tough animals.

Safari Press sells a small book on the anatomy of African game animals that is great. Definitely worth buying. It shows the location of the heart from every angle.

I second the recommendation to use a service like rifle permits to help with the paperwork and getting your guns through customs in South Africa. They will save you a lot of time and hassles.

          Good luck!

Superior is who I use. They make great consistent ammo.

Wild cows. Shoot them behind the ear with a 30-30 and they'll drop like a rock.

Kinda hard when they are squared off at you.
