    Which AR optic?

I'm starting to window shop for a scope to go on my new Ruger AR556. Primary use will be range time and deer/hog hunting under 150 yards. Most of the hog hunting will be at night over lighted feeders.

I'm thinking I want a standard 2-7 hunting scope, but should I consider some of the 1-4 or 1-6 AR scopes? Keeping weight and bulk down would be nice, but I want enough zoom on the top end for the occasional coyote or small pig at long range. Objective lense size is another consideration since much of the hunting will be at night.

I'm looking to stay around or under $250 for the scope.

On another note, what makes one-piece PEPR-style mounts preferable to standard rings on an AR? I'm not biased, just curious.

    Thanks all.

I have an older version of this scope with the Leupold integrated rings. No complaints.

      I just got a primary arms 1-8x24
I love this scope. Look it up.
It's sitting on a PEPR quick detach mount

              I prefer a 1-4 or 1-6. I have an mtac 1-4 on my ar.

I use a 1-4x Vortex Viper PST on my AR15 that I use for hunting. It's a good optic. I've shot two hogs at night with both being around 50 yards. It was enough magnification both times with a red XLR 250 light. Also killed a coon at 350-400 yards in day time.

However when I build my 6.8 in a few months I'm stepping up to a 2-7x most likely. Additional magnification at night would help a lot when trying to identify a target that's further than 100 yards.

Vortex Optics and Primary Arms come to mind for the features you're looking for and the price you want. I would go over to their respective websites, find the models you like, and then check websites like Amazon.com and Jet.com for better pricing.

For low light situations, I'd recommend 30mm tubes and large objective lenses for the most light gathering. Those AR scopes with no objective bells are great for day time shooting, but you won't see anyone use them at night!

An illuminated reticle can be handy, but some people don't enjoy them.

For the one piece mounts, as it's been explained to me, they simply eliminate any chance of your rings being set up differently and possibly handle rough use/abuse better.

Hard to beat the old standard 3x9x40. I have Nikons on my ARs and have never been disappointed. I've shot hogs at dark that I couldn't see with out the scope.
