    Nitrided Defiance action or not?

I'm going to check with my gunsmith on what he prefers but I'm curious what my GS brethren thinks. I've got a chance to pick up a (new) Nitrided Defiance action or I can go with a standard (un-nitrided) Defiance action. I will be cerakoting the outside, to match the barrel, but I like the idea of the corrosion resistance and the purported 'slickness' of a Nitrided action, as well as the black appearance to the inside of the action: but I hear some people who think the process is a bad idea. So, I'm curious what y'all think?

Why have people said it's a bad idea?

if you plan to cerakote why pay extra for a finish you will paint over?

I own 3 nitrided actions and am 100% happy

I would NOT cerakote them as it defeats the purpose

Lots of internet chatter about the heat of the process causing problems by changing the hardness of the metal and even causing actions to go out of spec. I just got off the phone with Defiance and they said that, as long as H&M did the nitriding, there would be no problem and that they would still stand behind the action. Now, if others did the nitriding, they may not stand behind the action as many companies heat the actions too hot for Defiance' liking. Apparently, Defiance has worked closely with H&M on the process for their actions.

It doesn't defeat the purpose inside the action if I have only the outside cerakoted for cosmetic purposes - so that I can have a barrel and action in FDE. I'm more concerned about the inside anyway; because, in the field, it's easy to wipe down the outside of the action after a rain. My thinking, anyway.

It's so annoying when you're always right, Blake! Lol! You and my buddy Colt do this Ti me every time! Mike advised getting the Nitrided action and no outside cerakote because he worries that there's no way to keep some of the aluminum oxide from the prep from getting inside the action. Since the tolerances on the Defiance actions is so tight, he doesn't recommend cerakoting those actions. So, I'm either going to live with a black action and a FDE barrel or I'm going to have to cerakote the barrel black to match

Makes sense. Mine is gonna be PVD treated but not sure on all the differences there

If you absolutely have to have it cerakoted, get the bare action. If not, I would personally like the nitride action.

I went through 2 last week, from Anderson. Both failed horribly in less than 3 shots. Put a cheap black one in...200 rounds later zero issues

You might consider having your barrel nitride treated as well. Of course that depends on a number of things, but I've heard rumors of it extending barrel life, easing cleaning, increasing velocity, etc. I'm considering having it done to my 6.5WSM to try and extend my barrel life.

Thanks guys. I ordered the Nitrided action and I'll decide later about what to do with the barrel. Might take txfireguy2003's idea and run it past Bartlein and my GS. I'm just glad I finally committed to an action. No going back now. Lol

Glenn makes an awesom action as you'll be pleased

I've owned several of his actions dating back to 1992

Thanks brother! None of this would have happened without your help!

They say to shoot it some until it's broken in, because once it's been nitride treated, those machining marks and what not are there and won't wear down with further firing.
