    Need .223 bolt rifle suggestions

I'm seriously considering selling one of my ARs to fund a .223 bolt rifle and I'm looking for some suggestions on what to buy. I want a 20" (or less) barrel. Preferably threaded, since it will almost always be suppressed. I'm looking for a handy/compact truck and calling rifle. I'm really leaning towards the Savage Hog Rifle but I'm also considering the 700 SPS Tactical and the 700 SPS Threaded Barrel (essentially the same rifles). My calling partner has a Savage Ultimate Truck Gun (discontinued model) and it shoots .5 moa groups with inexpensive Fiocchi 55gr vmax ammo. I know there's all sorts of terrific high-end rifles out there but I'm looking for something that will be tough and not so nice that I'll mind if it gets banged up a bit. After all, it's a truck gun and (yet one more) calling rig.

I like my Ars but I've got 6 of them and no bolt action .223. I want something that I can load for specifically and not have to worry about feeding from a magazine. I like the Savage for out of the box accuracy but the 700 has SO many available upgrades.

    Any other makers/models I'm forgetting?

I have a Winchester Model 70 in a bolt .223 and I have been wanting an AR for years. I got the rifle from my old man and I put a Nikon 3x9-50 scope on it. I have never even fired a bullet through it. It is not a new gun, but its in good shape! Walnut stock. PM me if you want to discuss a possible trade!

The Ruger american ranch rifle is so cheap I almost passed on it.
I have one in 300aac that shoots great, I'm sure the .223 would as well and they come threaded

I think you've already nailed it, the savage or 700's already make great truck guns.

I had my hands on a 16 and 18 inch threaded barreled m700 in 308 yesterday. They both had the Hogue stocks and were around $700 if memory serves. The savage would likely be a little cheaper but every bit as good.

I would assume the above mentioned short threaded barrel is chambered in 223 but can't say it's a fact. Throw a can on front and it would be a vermin hammer.

I didn't see any 16 or 18 inch barreled rifles on Remington or Savage's websites. What model were you looking at?

The Savages are a couple bills cheaper than the 700s with lots of upgrades available; but the possibilities for upgrading the 700 are limitless. Just not sure if it's worth it (or even needed), to me, to spend the extra dough.

A drawback to the Ruger American Predator is the 22 inch barrel. I have one in .204 that I replaced the plastic stock with a Boyd's laminate that groups less than 1/2". I am considering giving up a little velocity and shortening it back to about 19" and re-threading it.

If you can find a Ruger American Ranch Rifle, they have a 16.1" barrel.

Looking at their website it appears that I was looking at an SPS tactical. It's available in 223 and a 16.5 inch barrel but doesn't specifiy if that one is threaded. Some models are some aren't.

I think for the intended purpose and coin the savage is the way to go. The only downside is if you wanted to build on it later, there's fewer options.

I've got a 700P LTR I might be interested in letting go of.

                        Need .223 bolt rifle suggestions

I bought a ruger ranch and it's a great gun, 16" barrel. The stock is shorter than the predator version which I didn't like so I ordered a lSS chassis.

Above pic is not my gun but what it's going to look like.

I wish that Winchester made a .223 Model 70 now that they've (finally) gone back to the claw extractor but they don't.

Check out the Mossberg MVP. It takes AR mags. 1:9 fluted 18 or 20" bbl. Fluted bolt.Dang good trigger and shoots the heavy .223(75gr) pretty good for a 1:9. Chambered in 5.56
But also likes the lighter loads like 55gr soft points

My other .223 bolt is a Savage Axis with a Boyds stock and slight trigger job. Loves the 50gr V Max .223. Economy priced rifle but accurate for the $. Trigger needs work or replacement on Axis. Timney sells one for $99. I opted to cut 1.5 rings off the trigger spring and polished up the trigger/sear a bit. Way better now. Mossberg trigger way better out of box.
Savage is on top and Mossberg bottom.

I have owned the savage hog hunter and own the 700 sps and both are great guns...BUT I just bought the ruger american .223 that is already threaded and has a 16 inch barrel and it shoots lights out!!! It is at a great price and shoots as good as the expensive guns without having to get it threaded. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND IT!! If I was to buy another one and had the money to buy the remington, I would still get the ruger american.
