    308 Federal Gold Medal Match?

Anyone hunt with the 168 grain gmm?

I've been reading and seeing mixed reviews.

you have a 168gr bullet if it retains only half of its original weight you still have over 80grs of bullet going through the animal. you will be fine

I use the 175gr SMK but limit to head or neck shots. the SMK bullet is very unpredictable on expansion it may frag or it may just punch a hole on chest shots

My rifle likes the 175 SMK bullets more so than the 168's. Could a few members show pics of success and maybe some failures of the SMK bullets on deer? I know I kind of high jacked your post. But I too really want to know as well.

Randy I would avoid using them. My gun loves them. But hunting I have had mixed results. If animal didn't drop dead, there was ZERO blood trail. Lost a deer and an aoudad shooting them. Switched to the 165gr gamekings and haven't looked back. Shoot the match kings if just target shooting.

The mixed results is why I wouldn't use them. They may work great and often due but they may pencil through or grenade.

They are designed for accuracy, not hunting. They are very good at what they are good at...but not for what they aren't good for..

I know people that use the 175's on elk and swear by them but I have seen mixed results on animals, unless you neck shoot them then no issues

I shoot the 168smk on paper as it's the most accurate round out of my gun....I don't hunt with it but have shot a few pigs with it when riding around. Not really hunting

If I was headed to the deer stand it is not what would be loaded in it

As markv said...look at game kings(I've had great results with them) or any other hunting round.. match kings arent designed to be a hunting round

I have had good luck with 168 Amax.

Oddly, everyone talks bad about using a target bullet except the Amax.

I myself used a 75 grain 22 cal amax at 3100 fps on two does recently and they performed as expected...They went off like a grenade turning the heart lungs into spaghetti.

I recovered part of one bullet from the off side shoulder and it weighed 23 grains.

This is what I expected and full well knew it won't leave a blood trail. I wouldn't use this round for large deer or a must shoot scene such as a trophy hunt. A doe or mgt deer, I can keep my shots under 200 yards and broadside picking and choosing when I take a shot.

BTW-both deer were DRT with one having a fragment in the hind quarter.

Not sure it's the ideal but what works for now. The only other high BC 22 cal heavy hunting bullet I know of is the swift Sciricco and so far I haven't been able to make it work in my rifle but plan on trying again soon.

Your 22cal did what I exspected it would have done also. The high in caliber you go the better the performance. My expernce has been with the 30cal 168. I achieved pass throughs on 2 of 3 animals. Non was under the skin of a large hog on the broke off side shoulder. A 250lb hog did some how make it about 30 yards and it was a painted the whole way. Watched a guy in TV take multiple large plains game in Africa with the 162 Amax and 7wsm.
