I want to buy my dad a 257 roberts. His grandfather had one. Dad is 63 so great grandads gun would have been from 30's to 40's. Assuming it was Winchester possibly Remington. Thoughts? Would like to make this a Christmas present if I can find one quick enough.

Do you want an original? The Winchester model 70 and 54 were both chambered in it, and the Remington 721 may have been, but I'm not sure about that. Look on gunbroker, collectors and Merz Antiques, they all have them from time to time. Expect to drop some coin though, as they are rarer and more pricey.
If you want a new one, they're not hard to find. I have a mid-80s Winchester myself.

You may find a Ruger Hawkeye on Gun Broker. I just did a search and there is one on there for 600.00 .
I own one and it shoots real well, but I installed a trigger and bedded the action. Plus I worked up a decent load using IMR 4350 and 100 gr Sierra spire points.
Its a safe queen most of the time as my 7mm-08 is my first choice. If you don't find a 257 Bob maybe a 7mm-08 would work. More choices of ammo and more choices of firearms, and low recoil.
Good Luck

I have a Ruger Mark II .257 Roberts I will sale. I have a TBH friend coming by my house tomorrow on his way to Tomball and can probably take the rifle there. Like new, not a mark on it I can see. It is topped with an Leupold 7.5x Adustable objective scope that is perfect for this gun. Maybe 50 rounds down the barrel and safe kept. Pm me your phone number if you want me to text pics and price.
