Savage does make some awful looking rifles, but they seem to perform better than they look. . . which harkens me back to your original sentiment.

See? That handgaurd is terrible haha. Barrel nuts, 8000 piece bolts in their bolt guns, and now ugly handgaurds. I'm really curious to see if they perform like their bolt guns. Someone test one!!

The lower level AR 15 shown above does not have the side charging handle. There are 4 or 5 variants, with 2 AR 15 and the rest AR 10, called the 10 long range or something like that. That is where the side charging handle comes in. Joe Bob has them all on the sight, although a couple don't have pictures. I believe the long range is one of those.
It is also listed at $1999 I believe
